Planners Postpone Surfwood Development Action

The Mendocino planning commission, by a 4-3 vote, postponed action on Surfwood Properties’ specific plan until November 20 to allow coastal residents to voice opinions. The site spans 700 acres north of Mendocino with condos, townhouses, a golf course, and open space near Russian Gulch State Park and Jackson State Forest. Authors Smith and Rose presented further plan details and an environmental impact statement noting low air noise impact and alignment with coast architecture.

California halts most new state highway projects

State Public Works Director James A Moe ordered a stoppage on bid advertisements for major highway projects after Congress failed to extend federal financing. He said $120 million planned ads to year end and $110 million in first quarter next year may be deferred if no highway bill passes by April.

Northwestern California Weather Update With Coastal Fog

Overcast conditions and dense coastal fog extend along the coast into coastal valleys late tonight and into morning. Clouds persist across the northern portion tonight with a slight chance of clearing. Cape Mendocino area remains in the fog focus.

Schmitz to Visit Ukiah for Brief Campaign Stop

Cong John G Schmitz American Independent Party candidate for president will fly into Ukiah airport next Wednesday Oct 25 at 3 30 p m to meet newsmen and supporters. He will be there about 30 minutes after flying in from Eureka luncheon. Schmitz a former Orange County state senator 1964 69 and Marine Corps aviator is backed by a busy schedule in California.

Saigon Leader Says Nixon Rejected Cease Fire Offer

South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu told about 40 National Assembly members that President Nixon refused a North Vietnamese cease fire before the November election. Thieu said he vetoed a coalition with the Communists and Nixon reportedly rejected the cease-fire. Hanoi demanded Thieu resign before any settlement, while Kissinger and Thieu held formal talks in Saigon with no details released.

Spy planes join search for Boggs in Alaska

Military spy planes swept the rugged Alaska coastline looking for Democratic Rep. Hile Boggs, aide Russell Brown, pilot E Jonz, and a missing Cessna 310 after a storm halted widespread search. Infrared Mohawk aircraft and an SR71 with reconnaissance cameras scanned the area from Anchorage toward Juneau as weather slowed efforts.

Planning Commission Accepts Irish Beach Impact Report

An environmental impact report for a proposed Irish Beach expansion was accepted 6-1 by the planning commission with a requirement to add new information as it becomes available. The report may guide supervisors in approving tentative maps for Moores & Associates development of 420 single family homes and 400 condominium units on land south of Irish Gulch, about three and a half miles north of Manchester.

Judge Keeps Motels Halt Until EIR Filed in Fort Bragg

Superior Judge A B Broaddus extended a temporary restraining order against Pacific Holiday Lodge of Fort Bragg over a proposed 200 unit motel on Jug Handie Creek headlands. He ruled an environmental impact report must be filed and properly reviewed under the California Environmental Quality Act before any construction proceeds. The decision cites Friends of Mammoth and requires a complete EIR addressing environmental impacts and mitigations.
