Ukiahan Dies In Auto Crash On Bush Street Bridge
Ukiah bridge supervisor Royce Edmund Gassman 49 of 612 Grove Ave died after his southbound car rammed the Bush Street bridge railing. The six by six redwood railing pierced the hood and struck him in the face chest and left shoulder. He died within an hour at the county hospital. A Nebraska native, he had been bridge superintendent since 1959. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm at Eversole Mortuary with VFW Post 1900 officiating. Burial Thursday at Golden Gate National Cemetery. Survived by son Russell Gassman of Ukiah, father William Gassman of York Neb., brother Paul Gassman of York Neb., sister Lillian Shaw of Scottsbluff Neb.

In Laytonville a 1 a m shootout at the Service Center left two men in custody facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon car theft attempt to commit a crime and burglary. John Riggs fired at Lynchard and Williams as the suspects fled in a stolen car. Lynchard surrendered minutes later after being tracked by Deputy Kroh and admitted tossing a Beretta pistol.
