Carlos edges two Italians to win 200 meters in pre-Olympics

John Carlos of East Texas State University wins the men’s 200-meter final in Mexico City, edging Pasquale Igannattosio and Ito Gianni as Poland’s Waldemar Baszanowski breaks three weightlifting world records. Baszanowski lifts 306 pounds in the press, 594 in clean and jerk, and 962.5 total.

McKay ends 28-year drought with USC win over Notre Dame

USC coach John McKay celebrated ending a 28 year Notre Dame triumph drought with a 24 to 7 victory at South Bend. Named UPI college football coach of the week, McKay explained his gamble on defending the Irish pass attack and praised his team’s performance. Lonborg and McCormick Named Top MLB Pitchers of 1967

Jim Lonborg of the Red Sox and Mike McCormick of the Giants were chosen as the majors best pitchers for 1967 by a panel of UPI experts. Lonborg finished 22-9 with a World Series one hitter performance, while McCormick went 29-10 with a 2.85 ERA aided by cortisone to combat tendonitis.

Young Ardy Woods Shuts Khoury League With No Hit Bid

Ten year old Ardy Woods pitched seven innings without allowing a hit in the Khoury League game but issued 23 walks. The record performance featured extreme control troubles and a rare no hit effort delayed by free passes.
