Lawyer Sues Clay For Cool $284,615

Houston dispatch reports Cassius Clay’s former lawyer Haden Covington sues the ex-champion for 284615 claiming he never got his share of the purse from the bout with the draft board. Clay, who was sentenced to prison then freed on bond on appeal, cites unpaid bills and seeks funds.

Jones Defeats Hank in Lively 10 Round Light Heavy Bout

Eddie Jones of Los Angeles won a clear decision over Henry Hank of Detroit in a ten round light heavyweight bout at the Silver Slipper Ballroom Las Vegas. Jones outboxed and outpunched Hank from start to finish to defend his World Boxing Association No 7 ranking with scores of 49-43, 49-43 and 50-41. Hank was cut and bled from the nose mouth and left eye by the final bell.

Bill McMurray Wins Comeback Knockout in Sacramento

Former state heavyweight champion Bill McMurray returned after a six month layoff with a six round knockout of Fred Lewis in Sacramento. McMurray weighed 212 pounds and opened a cut over Lewis’s right eye early, the cut worsening until a doctor stopped the bout in the seventh round. Lewis, 183 pounds from McCallan Air Force Base, claimed the cut occurred in the second round as McMurray hurt him.

Four Seals Rank Among Early NHL Top Scorers

Yvan Cournoyer of Montreal leads the NHL scoring race with seven points after three goals and four assists, as the first week of play ends. Bobby Hull sits one point behind with six points, while seven players tie for third with five points, including four California Seals and Montreal’s Jean Beliveau and Boston’s John McKenzie and Fred Stanfield.

Ukiah Frosh Soph Jayvee and Varsity Run at Vallejo Open

Ukiah plans a large cross country tuneup at Vallejo Dan Foley Park in Frosh Soph Jayvee and Varsity divisions. About six Frosh Soph runners head by David Orchard with Glenn Jensen Jeff Davis and Bob McDougall among others. Jayvee contenders include Jimmy John Ronco Haynes Skower Dave Eby and possibly Joe Turner. Varsity features Ted Harryman leading a strong group with Brent Milender and Mike McReynolds. Doug Chambers returns to tough Varsity action after an appendectomy as Ukiah seeks form ahead of conference finals.

Spartan Halfback Scrivner Questionable for Home Opener

San Jose State starting right halfback Mike Scrivner was hospitalized with asthmatic bronchitis and may miss the home opener against New Mexico. He has dropped from 185 to 172 pounds and will be hospitalized until Wednesday. his status for the game is listed as very questionable. Linebacker Fred Luke is out for the season.
