The Ukiah High Wildcats Marching Band won the Surf City Band Review Grand Sweepstakes and the Music Sweepstakes at Santa Cruz, earning 91.55 points for the Grand and 463.5 of 500 in Music. Band director Rowland Nielson praised the students as champions after a demanding two weeks of prep and competing at Cupertino and Santa Rosa.

County to hire new county counsel position
The Board of Supervisors will interview the three top applicants for the county counsel post in closed session Tuesday. The hire includes a salary range of 25 000 to 30 000 dollars with two deputy counsels at 16 000 to 24 000 dollars. A four man oral board led by County Administrator Al Beltrami conducted interviews today with board members including John Clausen Jim Botz and Ed Buckner. Eighteen applications were filed as the new post becomes effective January 1 1978 Rick Henderson the boards legal advisor will leave for private practice.
