Water line rupture may tie to San Fernando quake

SACRAMENTO AP UPI State Water Resources Director William Gianelli ordered an investigation to see if last winter's San Fernando earthquake caused the California Aqueduct to rupture near Lancaster. The 76 foot wide hole flooded Antelope Valley, with repair costs estimated at 50 000 to 100 000 dollars and a three month timeline. Investigators will inspect the Antelope Valley canal for weaknesses while officials doubt sabotage, noting the break occurred before the quake and that the canal’s completion will include automatic monitoring to detect level changes within two minutes.
