California seeks simplified property tax relief plan

Sacramento officials say a streamlined relief proposal is in the works to avoid past legislative gridlock. Finance Director Roy Bell notes possible use of income in relief formulas, while keeping revenue limits and a split roll for business versus residential taxes. The plan remains flexible with cost undetermined.

Former US representative indicted in Korean influence probe

A federal grand jury indicted former Democratic Rep. Richard Hanna of California on bribery, mail fraud, conspiracy and failure to register as a foreign agent in the Korean influence buying scandal on Capitol Hill. Park and two Koreans linked to KCIA face separate charges. Hanna's case marks a major development in the probe. Hanna, 63, served 1963-74 and reportedly benefited from Park's rice sales ventures. He has lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for over a year.

Ukiah marching band seeks third Santa Cruz trophy

Ukiah Wildcats' Marching Band eyes a historic third Santa Cruz Band Review Sweepstakes trophy as about thirty five bands converge at the resort city to challenge their bid for a second straight title. Dick Clark will lead the band after a 94.5 mace drum major score at Cupertino. Top rivals include Concord Minutemen Chowchilla Fresno high Merced Foothill Sunnyvale Capuchino San Bruno. The band departs at 4 a.m. after Friday night football duties.

Ukiah Unified Reaches Tentative Salary Pact For Staff

Ukiah Unified District and 254 teachers and certificated staff announce a tentative salary and fringe benefits agreement for the current fiscal year after months of negotiation. A ratification vote is set for Monday at 7 30 p m at Yokayo School with details to follow after ratification.

Overtime granted for county public works managers

The board of supervisors approved a one-time gesture to pay hourly overtime to three management officials from the Public Works Department for a 9 20 day period. The move stems from a flood of EDA funded projects needing initiation within 90 days, with salaried staff previously barred from overtime. The resolution, debated by Barbero and Banker, runs Sept 17 to Nov 20 and expires automatically.

Redwood Park Expansion Gets Senate Committee Approval

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved a bill to expand Redwood National Park by 48 000 acres to curb erosion from logging around its borders. The measure authorizes 359 million dollars and moves to the Senate floor, while the House Rules Committee blocks progress.
