Amtrak outlines five year plan for midwest and west corridors

Washington based Amtrak releases a five year plan to improve high speed corridors outside the East, naming Chicago Detroit and Los Angeles San Diego. The plan contemplates system restructuring after a study next year that could abandon some routes and open others.

Express Train Crashes Into Freight Train at Naini Station

At Naini station in northern India a speeding express train from Calcutta to New Delhi struck a standing freight train before dawn. Officials of Northern Railways reported 61 dead and 150 injured, with 81 in serious condition and the toll likely to rise.

Economists foresee 6 percent inflation in 1978 rise

Frances H. Schott, newly elected NABE president, said inflation will stay above 6 percent and unemployment around 6.7 percent in 1978. Despite this, economists surveyed expect the expansion that began in 1975 to continue for about 15 more months.

Fair conditions persist across Northwestern California through Tuesday with coastal fog or low clouds at night and in the morning. Temperatures change little with Fort Bragg around 48 during the night and 65 in the day Ukiah about 46 at night and 85 by day.

Soyuz 25 aborts return as docking fails

The Soyuz 25 mission aborted after an attempted linkup with the Salyut 6 space station failed. Cosmonauts Vladimir Kovalenok and Valery Ryumin were ordered to return to Earth about 24 hours into the flight, with docking canceled due to deviations from the planned regime. The mission had been aimed at a space spectacular for Sputnik 1 and Revolution anniversary celebrations.

Local rider injured in vehicle crash near Willits

Andy Amsbaugh 67 of Ukiah in stable condition after his car plunged over a 25 foot embankment Sunday evening while returning from Covelo. CHP says he lost control on Highway 162 at 8 p.m. the car crossed lanes and fell into the Eel River area. The case is under investigation. A 17 year old Fort Bragg youth hurt in motorcycle crash near Mendocino Coast Hospital. Daniel Wade Jacobson remained in satisfactory condition after a 5:10 p.m. Sunday accident on Sherwood Road seven miles east of Highway 1 where he struck a tree stump and fell from his cycle.

Jim Eddie Honored by Mendocino County 4-H Council

Potter Valley rancher Jim Eddie, chair of the Mendocino County board of supervisors, was named 4-H alumnus of the year at the Achievement Day ceremony in Potter Valley school. The event recognized 4-H members and leaders, awarded posters, livestock champions, and honored delegates from the Citizenship Shortcourse in Washington, D.C. Mary Gundy and Jim Brown won Lake County fair livestock medals, and 125 attendees filled the gym for the celebration led by the county 4-H All Stars Cathy Cole, Brett Fredricks, and Mary Kaye.

Man stabbed in bar brawl at Rock Inn Bar

Timothy Anderson, 21, of Covelo, received multiple stab wounds during a Saturday night fight at the Rock Inn Bar in Covelo. Deputies held six men. Steven Palmer was charged with attempted murder after five were released. Anderson treated and released from Howard Hospital, Willits. Case still under investigation.
