Mendocino County’s 1964 grape crop is estimated at about 16,000 tons, down 1,800 from 1963, with higher quality fruit.
Redwood Valley resident Daniel Tibbets aged 76 was held on a 220 bail after sheriff deputies served a Ukiah Justice Court warrant charging him with battery against a Calpella couple. Deputies say the altercation involved two other senior citizens weeks earlier. Betty Tanner of Ukiah was arrested for driving without a valid license and for failure to yield right of way. In Willits, deputies reported further actions.
Ukiah City Council opened a feasibility study for a $900,000 capital outlay bond program to fund a new firehouse city hall library and park improvements. J B Hannauer Co will prepare one to four bond proposals with a $15000 fee if the full plan proceeds. The study cost varies with number of bonds and a no‑pay if no bonds pass guarantee protects council. An annual audit praised finances and advised safer garage procedures.
Park and Winnie McKeever testified they witnessed the slaying of Elaine McCool and her husband Clifton. The defendant William J. Conley faces a double murder charge with premeditation alleged.
The New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 3 to even the 1964 World Series at one game each. Rookie pitcher McLain Stottlemyre starred, with Cardinals scoring in the third, eighth, and ninth innings but failing to overcome the early Yankee lead. Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the Democrats inherited the Cuba problem from the Eisenhower era and that curing it is harder than preventing it. He rebutted Miller's critique of U.S. policy and noted the Kennedy and Johnson administrations faced the cure, not prevention, of Cuba's defection. Rusk also warned Sukarno that the U S would defend the Philippines if attacked, and expressed optimism about NATO allies.

Vietnamese sources say one helicopter was downed by friendly fire after reportedly killing 25 and wounding 27, while American investigators say casualties were far fewer.
In Longview Texas police say Rex Crowder Jr five heard his baby brother Ricky Dell crying and led investigators to a gully where the two month old boy lay dead after exposure in chilly weather. Rex’s mother Mrs Rex Crowder 25 was charged after the infant disappeared Sunday night. Authorities say the mother claimed a blue car kidnapped Ricky while she bought stationery for her husband stationed in the Philippines. The boy was found near a hill on Highway 281 and died in the sand and soil.
