Jobless Rate Edges Down to 6.9 Percent in September

UPI reports September unemployment fell to 6.9 percent from August as total joblessness stayed near a six month plateau at 7 percent. Black unemployment dropped to 13.1 percent while overall payrolls rose 320,000 with a 500,000 rise for women and a 210,000 fall for teenagers.

Energy Crisis Intervention Program urged after rejection

Attorney Art Maillet from Indian Legal Services urges Ukiah City Council to reconsider a state program that would fund fuel aid for the poor and elderly. The program, which guarantees payments to fuel suppliers, could help about 70 residents with roughly 2400 dollars each. City officials cited the program as a money opportunity pulled from the consent calendar and voted down.
