Defense Challenges Shrink Klee Jury Impaneling Progress

Chamber Starts Membership Drive Tomorrow

Ukiah Chamber of Commerce will launch its annual membership drive tomorrow with a complimentary breakfast at the Palace Hotel Timber Room. Campaign chairman Larkin Younce said solicitors will scour the town, aiming to contact every eligible business and professional concern without a set numerical goal. He predicted strong cooperation could yield the chamber’s greatest recruitment effort.

Unemployed Key to Lumbering Tariff Debate

Washington observers heard Mortimer B. Doyle of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association press for a 10 percent import quota on Canadian softwood lumber to curb unemployment. Doyle cited a drop in domestic employment from 467,700 in 1947 to about 306,000 last year and urged stamping Canadian lumber with Canada to curb shipments. Rep. Clem Miller warned that rising imports threaten the western economy and lumber districts, noting the impact on Northern California jobs.

Junior Achievement Program Begins at Ukiah High

Santa Maria Calif UPS six missile experts and a pilot were killed when a twin engined charter plane crashed during landing in a grove of eucalyptus trees Monday night. New Opportunity For Women Here In Ukiah Area

The local Department of Employment seeks women with electronics assembly experience or willing to be trained. Nixon Brown Debated In Fiery California Gubernatorial Clash

Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Gov. Edmund G. Brown clashed in a first head-to-head California debate.
