Atlas ICBM Readiness Nears First Test

Convair Division of General Dynamics builds four new test facilities for the Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile. Tests will occur at Edwards Air Force Base, Patrick AFB, and two San Diego sites with launches at Florida. About 100 personnel are at Patrick, rising to 400, as Convair staffs total near 7,060 workers on the project.

Navy Balloon Reaches 76000 Feet Then Lands Near Kennedy Neb

A Navy air balloon carrying two pilots rose to 76000 feet from the Stratobowl near Rapid City and began a rapid uncontrolled descent. Commanders M D Ross and M L Lewis declared an emergency and rode out the fall, later walking away from the wreckage as the balloon landed near Kennedy Nebraska. The cause of the near disaster was not immediately known.

Ukiah Adopts 26 Mercury Vapor Street Lights Plan

City installs 26 modern mercury vapor luminaires on State and School streets with 30 inch poles and ballast transformers. City Manager Lyell Cash says the lights are taller and provide about ten times as much illumination, replacing old lamps as part of a broader lighting upgrade funded at $5,687 plus $10,000 for miscellaneous improvements.

Welfare Dept Seeks Boarding Homes for Aged in Mendocino

Mendocino County welfare officials urge licensed boarding homes to care for elderly residents. Roland Kussow notes 1413 seniors receive aid and many are healthy but lack home-based care. Nine homes serve about 40. 70 to 90 more beds are needed countywide.

Democrats secured control of both chambers after Kentucky’s upset shifted the Senate tally to 49 Democrats and 47 Republicans. With Ohio Governor Frank Lausche choosing to stay in Columbus, Democrats hold a 48 47 edge pending attendance on opening day. House gains were solid for the Democrats despite Eisenhower’s landslide victory.

Lakeport Car Accident on Highway 20 Injures Two

George McCoy age 18 and William Milender age 16 of Lakeport sustained minor injuries in a Tuesday evening crash on Highway 20 five miles east of Redwood. McCoy said he swung to avoid a truck in the wrong lane, the car skidded into a bank, then spun. Milender suffered facial cuts and bruises.

City sales tax up with new state collection system

Ukiah officials report near five thousand dollars more in city sales tax receipts this year compared with last year as the state board of equalization begins collecting the tax. City Manager Lyell Cash says the first returns show 4899.80 for two monthly payments covering July 1 to Sept 7, with 85 percent to city and 15 percent to county.

Express Co Offices Burglarized

The Railway Express Company's depot at 266 East Smith Street was burglarized Wednesday evening for cash only. An iron bar pried the back door, leaving the entry open. Police found about 25 dollars in the till plus pennies missing. no other items disturbed. J W Finke reported the incident.

Mendocino County Sets Record Voter Turnout at 77.96 Percent

Mendocino County reported a record 17 264 voters at the polls with 77.96 percent turnout among registered voters. Incumbent Hubert B Scudder trails Clem Miller by 127 votes in the county's congressional race with 818 absentee ballots pending and unofficial results from 108 precincts. President Eisenhower leads Adlai Stevenson by a wide margin statewide as other races show Miller’s local influence and party activity.

Youth Pleads Not Guilty in Fort Bragg Shooting

Charles Johnson a 19 year old Coast Guard seaman pleaded not guilty to assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting of Arthur Piver 22 at a Fort Bragg drinking party. Johnson released on 1500 cash bail posted by Oakland parents. Piver wounded in neck and abdomen at Noyo Harbor Coast Guard station and hospitalized.

Teenage Racers To Face Court

Two teenagers Marie Francis Wilcox a Ukiah high school senior and Fred James Fiwing an 18 year old Redwood Valley man will stand trial before Judge Fred Goss at 3 p.m. Tuesday November 20 for staging an auto drag race in North State street with speeds around 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. They pleaded not guilty and the trial date was set. Three Oklahoma men cited for racing on North State in October were fined by Judge Goss after a prior court trial. those charges were dismissed for lack of evidence.
