Funeral Rites Tuesday for Coast death by own action
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon for Carl Bertino a 41 year old laborer who died Friday night by hanging himself in a Fort Bragg jail cell. The Rev Leo Reed will officiate at Can Narr Funeral Home with interment in Rose Memorial Park. Officer Edward Cain placed Bertino in custody after he stepped in front of a moving car and later found him hanging by a belt in the cell door. No note was left and Deputy Coroner Larry Moore declared death. Survived by wife Sally Bertino daughter Lee Bertino father Henry Bertino mother Suzanne Fortier and 10 brothers and sisters.

Pollution Control Board told county supervisors the suggested disinfection standard and a 30 day holding pond are too stringent and idealistic. Herbert Foster and John Gannon of the State Bureau of Sanitary Engineering defended the proposal noting that drinking water standards guide the plant. Land limits prevent pond construction, and no alternative solution exists. The plant has yet to meet the disinfection requirement, with the matter to be continued at Friday’s Healdsburg board meeting.
