Consul general explains Northern Ireland roots of conflict

Irish consul general Brendan Moran told South Ukiah Rotary Club that Northern Ireland's troubles date to the 16th century as English settlers displaced Ulster Catholics. He stressed the conflict is economic and civil rights driven, not purely religious, tracing history from English rule to 1968 civil rights unrest and the 1969-70 British army actions. He noted Irish nationalism and the north’s unionist stance, predicted unification would raise Republic taxes, and urged US understanding for a negotiated peace. Moran also cited Ireland's entry to the EEC and population trends.
