Fire destroys New York stockyards and piers in massive blaze
A massive fire in Jersey City destroyed a square mile of abandoned stockyards and Hudson River piers, trapping three firefighters on a tower and injuring many others. Fire officials estimate millions in damage with six piers and five float bridges lost. The blaze began in an abandoned stock pen near the riverfront and spread via brush as winds pushed sparks toward New York Pier 3, where a fireboat contained a separate blaze.

Patterson Fire Devours Seven Downtown Buildings
A downtown block in Patterson Stanislaus County saw seven buildings destroyed by a blaze that burned for over two hours after being reported at 3:30 a.m. Firefighters from four communities and the U S Naval Air Auxiliary Center at Crows Landing battled the fire. Fire Chief Alex Kosich said the fire began in an alley and spread quickly through wooden structures. No injuries were reported.
