Elks Club Jamboree Fundraiser Set In Ukiah

Tickets for the Elks Club Jamboree Ball in Ukiah go on sale for 10 dollars per couple. The event at Carl Purdy Hall begins with a 7 pm happy hour, followed by New York steak dinner and dancing. Plans for the new Elks Building will be unveiled during the evening.

California industry faces worst recession in 20 years

Wells Fargo Bank economists warn California's industry is in its deepest recession in two decades and likely to persist through 1971. The report cites nearly 270,000 factory job losses, reduced work weeks, and lower real earnings while noting declines across ships, aircraft, steel, auto, foods, missiles, electronics, and space sectors. The downturn is expected to ease gradually in 1972 with modest expansion afterward.

Vernon Martin dies at 57 in Ukiah rites Friday

Vernon C. Martin Sr. 57, Ukiah resident for two years and former Erwin, Montana native, died Tuesday after a brief illness in a local hospital. He is survived by his widow Dorothy, two children Vernon Jr and Jackie Brumm, a brother Capt. Martin, 11 grandchildren, and the Ukiah fire department as a brother. Funeral services Friday at 11 a.m. at Eversole Mortuary with burial in Ukiah Cemetery.

Mendocino Racher Laforet Family Noted in Obituary

An obituary notes Laforet family ties spanning Mendocino and beyond. France in 1888 and California since, with surviving wife Laforet of Ukiah, son Martin Laforet of Sobrante, and grandchildren. Additional named relations include Mrs. Ted Gradin of Sun and Mrs. Turner of Washington, among nine grandchildren.

Three Ukiah youths arrested on drug charges

Three Mendocino County youths were arrested early this morning as narcotics offenders after a two month investigation. Michael Van Fleet 19 Elk Neil Stanford Crenshaw 18 Ukiah and Leonard Winter II 19 Ukiah were booked on possession and sale of dangerous drugs with bail set at 2500. Authorities say the trio had been linked to several incidents in Ukiah and county areas.

Rice scholarship awarded to Kristine Knudsen in Ukiah

Miss Kristine Knudsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Knudsen of Ukiah, received the Eva Milliken Rice scholarship from Mendoseta, the Ukiah Unified school district teachers association. Three Round Valley women Vella Hart Eileen Hodges and Dolores Hopkins write Gov Reagan Congressman Clausen and State Senator Collier condemning the Division of Highways for failing to cope with a large Covelo Road slide that has shut traffic for about two weeks. They urge timely information and better handling of the state route and note detours via Laytonville Covelo Road may not be suitable for large vehicles. local highway officials say crews are removing the slide nine miles east of Highway 101 and traffic is on a one way schedule from 7 a.m. to sundown while night closures force detours.

Ukiah couple injured in head-on crash on 101

A Ukiah couple suffered major lacerations and other injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 101 north of Willits around 4 p.m. Steven Davis, 24, and his wife Ida Davis, 33, were taken to Howard Memorial Hospital in fair condition. W. D. Knox of Willits was not hospitalized.

Williams 83 Dies. Rites Friday At Ukiah Cemetery

William A. Williams 83 of Ukiah died Wednesday after a long California residence. Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Ukiah Cemetery. He was a retired Mendocino State Hospital employee, native of Minnesota, survived by a brother Henry Hildegard of San Diego and sisters Eleanor Carping of Roseville and Amy Billsister of Oregon. his wife Lillian Williams preceded him in death. Reverend Travis Hyatt will officiate.

Legal firm to occupy new offices in Ukiah area

Richard Petersen and Robert Fowler, Ukiah attorneys and public defenders, have purchased the law offices at 150 N. Pine, formerly Tim O'Brien’s space, and the building at 405 W. Standley Street. They plan to move from School S to the new quarters on N. Pine. O'Brien, appointed by Gov. Reagan to the Superior Court in Dept. 2, began his duties Monday, succeeding Judge Wayne Burke who resigned.

Teenage Girl Crashes, Injuries Reported Near Mendocino State Hospital

Charlotte Nagel, 19, of Ukiah, suffered possible shoulder and other injuries after dozing at the wheel and veering off Eastside Road south of Tindall Lane near Mendocino State Hospital at 2:40 a.m. Her car left the road, gouged a ditch, then returned to Eastside. She was taken to Mendocino Community Hospital for treatment.
