Second District Candidates Speak at Ukiah Forum

Four candidates for Second District supervisor and three for Ukiah Judicial District judge will address campaign issues at a Ukiah League of Women Voters forum in Superior Court Department No 1 tomorrow at 8. Moderator Power and League president Mrs Haskell will lead. questions cover library, junior college, water, grand jury, and recreation. Public invited.

Seven Thousand Line Streets for Rodeo Parade

An estimated seven thousand people lined Ukiah streets for over an hour Saturday afternoon to view a 112 unit parade honoring the Ukiah Valley Rodeo at 12th District Fair Grounds. The parade drew record crowd support and featured trophy winners from Ukiah Boy Scout Troop 46, the Ukiah Fire Department, Mendocino County Sheriff's Posse, and Willits High School band.

The Supreme Court ruled the five year shutdown of Prince Edward County public schools to avoid integration was unconstitutional and ordered their desegregated reopening, likely for the next school year beginning September.

Mendocino Board Drops Microfilming Budget Item

Mendocino County supervisors paused a proposed 24,000 microfilming project for 100 plus years of legal and historical records citing space needs and a possible new record process. Clerk Mary Gilley and acting clerk Dolores Shannon pressed for higher pay for full time stenographers, arguing current wages hinder experienced staff and child care costs. The board will revisit clerical classifications and wages with civil service, and approved 1,200 for master planning of a county office complex beside current school and agricultural offices.

California lawmakers wrapped up a near record special session adjourning Saturday after a long wearying stretch. Governor Brown praised a job well done while noting time wasting. Stampede Leaves 268 Dead in Peru Riots

A riot and stampede at Lima’s national stadium left 268 dead with authorities reporting possible higher tolls. A government emergency decree suspended civil rights for 30 days and placed police under military control. Rioters damaged the Goodyear plant and other facilities while two mobs marched on city hall and the president’s residence.
