Mendocino College Wins Early Grants and Sports Access

Mendocino College trustees heard of a potential $20 000 federal state funded vocational education grant for 1973 74. The district also earned state approval to allow local student athletes to compete in non offered sports at adjoining colleges, with procedures to protect athlete eligibility. Skip Hunter becomes baseball coach, and 2500 plus applications pour in for district jobs alongside 77 more on Wednesday and 86 today. Charles Newton joins as special counselor for vocational study and transfer programs.

Waters says Hansen was drunk when stabbed in Fern Hill case

Darrell Waters testified he believed Robert Hansen was drunk the night of the Boonville stabbing and that Hansen had shouted threats. The defense wrapped its case as prosecutors presented psychiatry and autopsy evidence noting Waters possessed malice aforethought, with the trial nearing jury deliberations.

Oil firms warn of Memorial Day gas shortage

United Press International reports Gulf and Shell spokesmen warn immediate shortages for the Memorial Day weekend. They say it is too early to know if enough gasoline will be available as several Memphis stations run dry. Treasury stores and Sears stations expect June resupply, while Standard Oil drops trading stamps to curb promotions amid the shortage.

Md. congressman Mills found dead after GAO probe

Rep. William O. Mills of Maryland was found shot to death at a farm near his Easton home. Police say no foul play is evident, with investigations underway. The GAO reported the 1971 secret funds from Nixon campaign linked to a $25,000 cash contribution Mills faced scrutiny for failing to report. House leaders canceled business amid shock and sorrow.

Senate panel probes McCord Alch testimony gaps

The Senate Watergate committee pressed discrepancies between James W. McCord Jr. and his former lawyer Gerald Aich and questioned whether McCord and Aich discussed CIA involvement in Watergate. Sen. Baker urged lie detector tests, while Sen. Ervin pushed for justice department records to show any conspiracy ties involving DNC figures. The panel held Alch's testimony two days and said McCord and Fensterwald may submit sworn statements rather than return to the stand.

Tired but happy Ukiah band returns from Victoria

After a six day trip to Victoria British Columbia the Ukiah high school marching band placed second in the large school division at the Victoria days celebration. Director Rowland Nielson urged punctual return to classes and the group plans to host Festival 73 parade and band review on June 2. Ukiah will lead the parade but not compete for trophies.

High tension line traps Ukiah women

Three Ukiah women escaped electrocution when a 12,000 volt transmission line fell across their car roof after a truck backed into a utility pole. Ambulence driver Maurice Roper praised quick actions by observer Guy Von Brandt who freed the women with a broom. Power was restored within minutes and the Pomolita Choral Club concert was postponed.
