Abandon Lockheed urged by contractor official

Gordon Rule, head of a Navy claims group, urged Congress to deny Lockheed's 250 million loan guarantee and let the company fail. He accused Admiral Sonenshein of intervening in ship contract settlements and warned that large aerospace firms try to drain the government. He said no claims should be paid until fully supported and questioned the bailout as unwise.

Guard mobilizes to aid Chattanooga amid rioting

National Guard troops trained with live ammunition moved into Chattanooga to assist police after three nights of looting sniping and arson by black youths. Gov. Dunn ordered 1500 to 2000 guardsmen to patrol city streets as Mayor Walker sought relief for an overwhelmed police force.

Ex Journal photographer seeks $100000 over alleged false arrest

Robert A. Curry, a former Ukiah Daily Journal photographer now in Marysville, filed a claim against Mendocino County for $100,000 citing false arrest, lost property, and personal injuries after being arrested for alleged contempt of court while photographing outside Ukiah Justice Court. The claim argues illegal orders, unlawful search, and violation of First Amendment rights occurred during the Feb. court appearance coverage.

Ukiah Festival parade breaks attendance and prize records

About 25 000 people attended the three day Festival of the Sizzling ’70s in Ukiah. The Mendo Lake Pomo Indian Council won best parade entry with a papier mache eagle float. Ukiah Elks Lodge and Business and Professional Women won top float prizes. Various booths and vehicle entries received honors in multiple categories.

Belgrade Jet Crash Kills 78 British Tourists

A Yugoslav Aviogenex jet crashed at Rijeka Airport on Krk Island killing 78 people, 72 of them British tourists. Firemen could not penetrate flames as witnesses saw the aircraft strike the runway and explode, with five survivors including the pilot and crew.

Mistrial Declared in Seale Huggins Murder Conspiracy Case

Superior Court Judge Harold M. Mulvey halted the murder conspiracy trial of Black Panther Bobby G. Seale and Ericka Huggins after a seven white and five black jurors reported a deadlock on all nine charges. The jury noted it was futile to continue deliberating.

Ukiah High Band Tops Parade At Festival Event

Ukiah High School marching band directed by Rowland Nielson and drum major Dan Farney won best band in the Ukiah Jaycees parade tied to the Festival of the Sizzling 70s with 15 bands competing. Jo Ann Frassinello earned top drum majorette honors while Willows Fort Bragg Newark Santa Rosa and Chico placed in various high school divisions.
