Fluoridation ballot plan advances in city council vote

The city council voted 3-2 to place a fluoridation measure on next March’s ballot. Lorraine Pearson earned the swing vote, with support from Barry Wood and Sterling Norgard, while Gary Weinkauf and Jack Simpson opposed citing budget and timing concerns.

Mendocino High School seniors win L P scholarships

Three Mendocino County seniors received $3,000 Louisiana-Pacific scholarships at a Ukiah luncheon. JoAnna Quesada of Anderson Valley High, Ross Vieu of Willits, and Sylvia Wallis of Fort Bragg were honored by L P Ukiah division manager Lowell Ambrosini with certificates.

Board clash over deleting Good Friday holiday in county

Mendocino County board and MCEA attorney spar over eliminating Good Friday as a paid holiday citing a state court ruling. Banker pressed for district attorney input while Stephens urged meet and confer talks behind closed doors. The board may replace the day with a half holiday pending further action.

Pair found guilty in shooting at Union 76 station

A Mendocino County Superior Court jury found Kevin Anderson and John Fanucchi guilty on all counts for conspiracy to commit robbery first degree robbery first degree burglary and attempted murder in the early March 23 Union 76 station robbery and shooting of 23 year old John Leeper. Anderson faces 20 years to life for robbery and attempted murder with sentencing set for June 6. Fanucchi faces five years to life. The same session noted county land option talks for a Fort Bragg coastal county complex with a six month option on 3.75 acres along Franklin Street and Cypress to South Streets with a $1,000 option per parcel. The original $135,000 asking price may negotiate downward.

Court order blocks firing of Mayfield in coastal panel

Ukiah official John Mayfield Jr. remains on the North Coast Regional Commission after Superior Judge Curtis Wetter voided Gov. Jerry Brown’s firing action and set aside the appointment of Budd Thomas as his successor. The ruling cites misinterpretation of Prop. 20 and warns of dismissals without cause. a stay could be issued only by the Court of Appeal. In Tanzania, a search continues for three American students and a Dutch woman kidnapped from a wildlife reserve by gunmen.

Ukiah council bans smoking in chambers during meetings

The Ukiah city council introduced an ordinance prohibiting smoking in council chambers while public meetings proceed with final action expected at the June 4 meeting. Vice Mayor Wood lit a cigar during the briefing, drawing laughs as city leaders and residents discussed the proposal and scope.

Contempt bid over Ukiah district Title I plan flaws

California Indian Legal Services asks U S District Court to cite Ukiah Unified School District for contempt over failure to present a meaningful implementation plan by May 1. Dr Donald DeMartini, assistant superintendent, is accused of blocking parent involvement and Title I compliance, with alleged misrepresentation and improper handling of funds and DAC processes during 1972 74. Casper asserts the May 1 plan is merely vague intent and violates the consent decree and federal law.
