Portuguese mob attacks Marines ship over Communist document

A Portuguese mob assaulted a U.S. Marines ship after a document calling for a purge in the government network was published. The ruling regime urged more than 70 workers ousted for being reactionary or latent homosexuals, many wearing Socialist badges. Information Minister Jorge Correia Jesuino ordered evacuation and court settlement, with publication of the newspaper likely suspended pending decision.

Kissinger Gromyko report progress in Vienna talks

In Vienna Kissinger said he and Andrei Gromyko made progress on Middle East arms control and the European Security Conference. They agreed to meet again soon to discuss nuclear disarmament and the Middle East, with a cordial atmosphere and plans to continue talks in Bonn on his Europe tour.

Polish trawler Kalmar seized over territorial waters claim

UPI reports attorney Lester Clark says the Polish 278 foot trawler Kalmar was fishing beyond the 12 mile limit when seized off Monterey and docked at Pier 9 in San Francisco. He argues the ship stayed at least 124 miles offshore with radar to maintain distance and seeks release and dismissal of suit. Bond set after value appraisal by Commerce Department. Existing proceedings include a murder arrest in Willits unrelated to the ship case.

Cambodian Gunboat Crew Defects After Mayaguez Link Denial

Ten Cambodian gunboat crew members defected to Thailand claiming mixed views on involvement in the Mayaguez seizure. They docked at Sattahip port flying a white flag before drifting offshore. Reports say a captain was thrown overboard and Thai authorities faced diplomatic awkwardness as U.S. Marines had previously recovered the ship and crew.

Fluoridation Vote Expected Tomorrow in Ukiah

Ukiah city council prepare for an 8 p.m. meeting at city hall to vote on fluoridation of the water supply. The agenda also includes a proposed ordinance to ban smoking in council chambers during meetings as the chambers near condemnation and relocation to the H and H Furniture building near Church Street.

Witness Identifies Suspects in Ukiah Station Shooting

John Wesley Leeper of Ukiah, shot six times in March, names Kevin Anderson of Sonoma and John Fanucchi of Sonoma as the assailants. He testified at Hillside Hospital, describing the robbery at Union 76 on Talmage Road and the car license plate tip that led to captures in Willits. Leeper recounts being struck, robbed, and shot, with life threatening injuries but improving.

Judge sets hearing on Mayfield dismissal injunction

Tehama Superior Court retiree Curtiss Wetter will hear tomorrow at 9 30 a request for a preliminary injunction to halt Gov Brown from removing John Mayfield Jr from the North Coast Regional Commission. Mayfield, Ukiah attorney Jared Carter says the suit seeks to block removal until his broader complaint is heard. Budd Thomas named interim by Brown pending Senate approval. Mayfield, a two term commission chair first appointed in 1972, faces past funding allegations he denies.

Coast college affiliation vote set next Tuesday
