Final Mendocino junior college plan delayed by county vote

A 7-5 County Committee on School District Organization vote keeps the Mendocino Junior College plan in study, delaying final adoption. Fort Bragg leaders led a delaying faction arguing for state cost relief before a bond issue. The debate occurred at Ukiah High School with plans for a possible $3.5 million bond and a five member at large trustees board.

Ukiah Mourns PG&E Worker Killed in Fall From Pole

James D Brooks 39 of Ukiah died in Ukiah hospital after falling 34 feet from a pole on Oak Knoll Road during transformer work. He loosened his safety belt while changing position. Born April 7 1925 in Arkansas he lived in California 25 years and in Ukiah 15. He attended Ukiah Methodist Church. services Saturday 2 pm at the Methodist Church with Rev. Wendell Ensor. Eversole Mortuary in charge. Survivors include wife Betty, father Roscoe and brother Herbert of Arkansas and five children. Contributions suggested to church educational unit.

H.S. Teens Launch ABC Fund Drive Through May Twenty Two

H S teenagers will raise two thousand dollars for the Mendocino Inland Branch of the American Red Cross in a two week campaign opening today. Delta Gamma Phi sorority and Junior Gray Ladies will canvass residential areas and hotels while the Collegians distribute posters. Dwight Hulse county administrator will contact offices. Chris Minard leads as drive chairman.

Murder Suspect Kills Motorist In Police Chase

Detroit police chase ends when suspect Bruce Waller Leikett crashes into a motorist, killing the driver at a suburban intersection. Leikett, in critical condition, faces charges tied to the Fredericksburg Virginia slayings of Sgt. Roy Wright and Patrolman Frank Mines. Two revolvers and handcuffs from the crash match weapons used in the earlier killings, linking the cases.

Fire call at Albertinumn reports furnace smoke sear

Friday at 6 51 a m a fire alarm was triggered for furnace smoke near Albertinumn. No damage reported. Fire crews arrived promptly and confirmed the scene was secure with no injuries noted.

Six Runaway Girls Safe in Lakewood California

Six runaway girls aged 4 to 16 were found safe in Lakewood California after being driven west from Fort Worth Texas by Elton Fennell 20 and Wilburn Hick 17. The group, from three families, were taken into juvenile custody when a housewife alerted authorities after a girl asked to call her father for money. A statewide Texas alert has been issued. Fennell remains sought while Hick is in custody. The cases involve the Aldridge and Butler families, with three sisters among the missing.

FBI probes crash of airliner near San Francisco

A Pacific Air Lines F27 crashed into a hill near Danville California killing 44 aboard. The FBI opened a full investigation after a .357 Magnum was found among the wreckage. An SF Police Inspector was among the victims, though his revolver was at home.

Ford plant strike hits Lorain as UAW walks out

About 4,200 members of United Auto Workers Local 425 began a strike at Ford Motor Co. in Lorain Ohio after a six hour bargaining session over 1383 grievances on health and production standards ended without agreement. The walkout followed a five day notice filed by the union and started in the midnight shift.

Johnson draws record crowds in Georgia on racial unity tour

President Johnson wrapped a two day Appalachian swing with a call for racial tolerance and equal opportunity. In Gainesville he spoke to about 60 000 people at Roosevelt Square noting FDR and urging end to fear. An Atlanta breakfast drew about 500 000 as Johnson urged southerners to ignore extremist banners and support civil rights.

McNamara Sets West Germany and Vietnam Trip

Officer Swenson Defector Returned as Unworthy

Captain Alfred Svenson, 31, of Scranton Pennsylvania, the only U S officer to defect to the Reds since WWII, has been expelled by East German authorities for being unworthy of asylum and for criminal offenses. U S Army spokesmen say he faced possible court martial for desertion and betraying secrets after his May 1963 defection near the East West German border. He is undergoing medical and security exams in a West German Army hospital while awaiting investigation results.
