Trial set for two lawmen on abalone charges

Cotati Police Chief Thomas Gray and Petaluma officer Jim Hetherington pleaded not guilty to taking over the legal limit of abalone. Trial scheduled May 18 in Arena Justice Court before Judge Leland Slavens. Gray, Hetherington cited April 15 north of Gualala by Fish and Game Warden Reid Smith. five abalone claimed to belong to Pat Corrigan.

Toy golf club nearly fatal to Ukiah boy

Daniel J. Baker four year old son of Patricia Polk of Deep Valley Trailer Court was critically injured when a toy golf club handle penetrated his head and brain to a depth of five inches after he fell while carrying the sharp piece of metal. He was transported from Ukiah to Hillside Hospital and then to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by Smith Airplane pilot Hank Jory with Larry and Guy Von Brandt assisting. The accident occurred at 3 p.m. and he was admitted at 4:45 p.m. He remains in the intensive care unit under treatment after surgery.

Woman Shot On River Outing Injures Calpella Woman

Christie Price, 50, was paralyzed and critically injured when a bullet struck her while she and family picnicked on a logging road river area near Van Arsdale dam on the Eel River. Verle Price, using a snub-barreled .38, fired at a metal can, the bullet hit Mrs Price as she retrieved lunch. She underwent surgery at Ukiah General Hospital and is in ICU as sheriff's investigators pursue whether ricocheted ground impact caused the wound.

County's taxable sales rise 23 percent in 72

Mendocino County recorded a 23.2 percent gain in taxable sales for fiscal year 1972, reaching 134.95 million dollars as the state posted a 14.6 percent statewide rise. Ukiah led with 43.524 million, Fort Bragg at 7.716 million, Willits at 14.485 million, and Point Arena at 887 thousand. Per capita spending averaged 2,617 dollars statewide, aided by gasoline sales tax.
