Notice of Foreclosure Sale on Mendocino Property

Public notice announces a foreclosure by Redwood Empire Title Company trustee on Lot 28 in Mendocino Coast Subdivision. The sale to satisfy the deed of trust obligations is set for April 21, 1971 at 10:00 a.m. at the front entrance of the title company office in Ukiah, with Ruby E. Sandkulla as assistant secretary.

Heart attack fatal to Rod Palmer at Ukiah golf course

Rodney Singley Palmer 50 of Ukiah died after a heart attack Saturday afternoon while playing on the 4th green of the Ukiah Municipal Golf Course. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Ukiah Methodist Church. Palmer, a lifelong sportsman, led Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club teams and belonged to several clubs. He operated Rod's Liquors and helped fund a new nine holes at the course. He is survived by his wife Jean, son Rodney, stepson Stanley Jensen, two daughters, and two grandchildren. Donations suggested to the American Heart Association or course fund.

Conference on forest taxation in Capitol

More than 1,000 assessors foresters forest land owners and other officials were invited to a Forest Taxation Conference in Sacramento May 5 and 6 announced by Pete Passos UC Extension. Topics include open space rural zoning land and timber appraisal under the Land Conservation Act and trends in forest taxation. The program is sponsored by the university school of forestry and conservation with state and county agencies and associations.

Drugs believed factor in youth's death

A 20 year old Garden Grove youth, John Lloyd Brown II, was found dead in a cabin near Minnie and Rancheria Creeks in Boonville. Coroner deputies suspect narcotic overdose, with autopsy pending. Brown hadrecently been arrested on narcotics charges and had come to Mendocino County two weeks ago. Funeral arrangements are pending at Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah.

Marion Freitas Dies at 77 in Ukiah Rites Tuesday

Marion Freitas 77 of Ukiah died Saturday from a heart attack at home. A Rosary is set tonight at 8:30 at Zimmerman Mortuary, with a Requiem Mass Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Marys Church officiated by Fr. Thomas Gowing. Burial in Ukiah Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include widow Mae Rose Freitas two children Lucille Kelez and Melvin E. Freitas a brother Anthony Freitas a grandson and several nieces and nephews donations to the American Cancer Society.

Tipsy driving arrests in local area over weekend

Highway Patrol officers detained three drunk driving suspects over the weekend. Alice Elizabeth Nephew, 59, Santa Rosa, was stopped on the freeway near Ukiah late Saturday and charged with drunk driving and crossing the center line. Bail $379. Dorothy June Smith, 42, Ukiah, arrested near Talmage Sunday. Bail $360. Jack Curry Bailey, 27, Willits, arrested near Willits Sunday. Bail $360.

Mrs. Erickson, 82, Ukiah, Dies After Long Life

Mrs. Elizabeth Erickson, a Finland native who came to the United States as a girl, died at 82 after residing in California 40 years and living in Ukiah nine months. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Bud Randall, Ukiah, plus a granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Services at Ever Sole Mortuary at 10 am with graveside rites at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito at 3 pm Tuesday. The Rev. Paul Larson will officiate.

Youth jailed for speeding in Ukiah case

Michael Wentworth 18 of Ukiah was arrested and jailed Friday after speeding and reckless driving in Ukiah. Officers Perry and Carkin reported he sped ran stop signs spun wheels and drifted through several turns on Mill and Spring Streets.

Death of Rev. E L Holsinger Remembered by Church

San Francisco report confirms the March 25 death of Rev. E L Holsinger. He served as supply minister for the Presbyterian Church here and was a longtime Sunday school missionary in northern California. He helped build Alder Point's first Presbyterian church and led Trinity and Lincoln Presbyterian Churches in San Francisco before retiring. He is survived by his wife, children, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending at Anker Lucier Mortuary for Charles William Johnson 73 of Covelo who died of apparent natural causes at his home Sunday per the coroner. Among survivors is his widow Melva Johnson.

Dr Charles E Roberts 92 a Ukiah optometrist and veteran dies at home after 40 years in Ukiah service. Services set Wednesday at 2 pm at Zimm erman Mortuary. He organized Mendocino County music groups and led Ukiah city band. Survived by widow Maude, son Harry D Roberts, three daughters, sister Flora Giffin and many grandchildren.

Final services held for Margaret Foster

A mass at St. Mary's Church honored Margaret M. Foster 62 of Ukiah who was found dead by her husband Ben O. Foster. Doctors cited heart attack as the cause. A Rosary was held at Ever Sole Mortuary and she was buried in Ukiah Catholic Cemetery after Mass conducted by Fr. Louis Persano. Foster was a Bakersfield native and a retired nurse who cared for Dr. William Waring.

Taylor Held in Beating In Laytonville

Merrill Dewitt Taylor 62 of Laytonville was arrested Friday on charges of injuring a child after allegedly beating his 13-year-old stepdaughter with an umbrella and throwing her from a Laytonville apartment before a second beating. Deputy Carl Kyle booked him at the county jail.

Oscar James Hines 70 of Laytonville died of apparent natural causes Saturday at his Ramsey Street home. The coroner’s office notified his death. Survivors include his widow Thelma M. Hines. Interment pending at Anker-Lucier Mortuary in Willits.
