Ukiah Unified bond proposal lands final defeat in 1972 vote

Ukiah Unified voters reject a $5.9 million school construction bond by 3,483 to 3,147 with 60.48 percent turnout. The measure would have funded a new high school, renovations for 6-7-8 grade use, and expanded space at Pomolita Yokayo Redwood Valley Calpella Potter Valley and more. Only absentee ballots provided a two thirds margin. overall approval failed to reach the 66.6 percent requirement.

State agencies back Benbow Dam demolition plan near Garberville

Officials from the State Department of Fish and Game and Parks and Recreation favor destroying the Benbow Dam on the Eel River to aid fish runs. A temporary gravel dam would replace it each winter and be rebuilt each spring to support recreation and water needs. Local input will guide final action while Mendocino State Hospital closure moves forward.

Moratorium on Dams Approved for Four North Coast Rivers

MSH Reagan to mothball Mendocino facility after closing

Mendocino State Hospital may be kept intact by the state after its closing under Gov. Reagan. Al Barbero said the governor agreed to mothball the site and provide county aid while seeking alternate use. No firm closing date yet, with May 1 as admissions end and late fall for on-site presence.
