Paschke urges farm group to flex political muscles

Ray Paschke, consultant to the Sonoma County Farm Bureau and winery councils, urged 100 plus attendees at a Redwood Empire Farm Bureau leadership conference to engage state and federal legislation and use news media to tell honest agricultural stories. He warned against Behr Wild Rivers style bills and zoning limits, pressed highway 101 upgrades and tax reforms, and tied school financing to broader fiscal changes.

Voters in the Ukiah Unified School District flock to polls for a 5.9 million dollar bond to fund new high school construction and modernization of multiple sites. Turnout seen across precincts with earlier results expected after polls close at 8 p.m. The two third vote threshold is required for passage, after prior bond efforts failed.

Reagan presses alternate use for Mendocino State Hospital

Governor Ronald Reagan told Ukiah delegates in Sacramento Mendocino County would have first priority on any alternate use for Mendocino State Hospital as Mendocino’s closing date is sought. The meeting on the hospital’s imminent closing was postponed, with DMH head Dr. J Stubblebine delaying a firm report and AB 35’s fate postponed.

Fatal Willits woman, husband injured in Hwy 101 crash near Laytonville

Willits woman Rose Harris Klapper, 51, died when her northbound car pulled into the path of a northbound Ukiah truck two miles north of Laytonville on Highway 101. Her husband, 57, was seriously injured. the driver of the Landis Morgan truck, Charles Grivette, 51, of Ukiah, was not reported injured. The crash occurred around 6 p.m. as Klapper signaled for a right turn and then moved left without a signal into the truck’s path. Klapper’s body was taken to Anker-Lucier Mortuary in Willits. funeral arrangements are pending.
