Facklam Named Redwood Valley Postmaster

Delbert E. Facklam, 50, appointed postmaster in Redwood Valley under the merit system after Congress and Nixon signed new legislation. He has postal service since 1965, most recently as a rural carrier in Ukiah, and has lived in Redwood Valley since 1960. He served in the Navy from 1939 to 1959.

Land Bank Cuts Loan Rate to 8 Percent

L Neil Gilliam, manager of the Federal Land Bank Association of Ukiah, announced a March 16 cut in the new loan rate to 8 percent from 8.5 percent. The rate reduction also applies to existing loans. Gilliam said the move follows Land Bank policy to offer farmers long-term real estate loans at the lowest possible cost consistent with sound business.

Woman jailed on charges in Ukiah arrest

Ester Philomena Cordova, 38, Yokayo Rancheria, was arrested Sunday afternoon at her home on a bench warrant from Ukiah Justice Court charging drunk driving, resisting arrest, and failure to appear. Deputy Murrell Agenbroad booked her in the county jail women’s section. Original salary figures for the president and vice president are noted.

Drunk Driving Arrests Reported in Two Cities

Delmas M. Mahan, 53, Las Vegas, Nevada, arrested on drunk driving charges after a traffic stop on N. State Street near Pomo Drive by CHP Officer Terrence Moses and booked at county jail with a $360 bail. David Leroy Farney, 24, Ukiah, arrested on drunk driving after a traffic stop near Church and State Streets by Officer Eugene Barrett and booked at city jail at 1:40 a.m.

Welfare and Medi Cal rolls swell in California

California's welfare and Medi Cal caseload rose to 2.45 million as 48,873 more people joined last month. AFDC additions neared 4,000 in February, with 2,451,387 on welfare and Medi Cal eligibility, up from 2,402,553 in January.

Ukiah Police Reserve Seeks 11 New Recruits in Unit Reorg

Ukiah police announce a reorganization of the reserve unit with 11 vacancies open to qualified applicants. The unit aims to expand from 16 to 27 members to back up regular officers and patrols. Miller-Unruh reading scholarships offered to teachers

Nassie 88 Succumbs in Sedona Ariz in Ukiah ties

Word arrived of the death of former Ukiah resident Fred A. Nassie at age 88 on March 18 in a Sedona Arizona hospital. He spent years in Ukiah in insurance and real estate, served on the Ukiah city council, and belonged to the local Masonic Lodge. Survived by widow Helen, two children Donald Nassie of Alturas and Marjorie Richardson of Sacramento, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cremation followed services.

Turkey shoot at Stroh Ranch April 4 near Potter Valley

A Sunday turkey shoot is planned for April 4 at the Stroh Ranch on Eel River Road at the north end of Potter Valley from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shells are available and prizes include turkeys and hams. A family day activity offers a skill game and food, with all proceeds going to the local American Cancer Society branch.
