Beirut endures a brutal eighth day of rocket mortar and gunfire with Americans and other foreigners moving families out. Beirut Radio calls the city a fighting zone as snipers strike ambulances and fire engines amid widespread casualties. Syrian mediation begins as violence surges across neighborhoods.
The 1974 75 Grand Jury issued its second report urging a new maximum security jail next to the rehab center on Low Gap Road, improved county administration, and reduced plea bargaining. It calls for reorganizing the District Attorney’s office, clearer duties, prompt case merit review, and unified handling by a single attorney. It also notes backlog in Ukiah Court and urges staffing fixes and better inter office communications.
Sacramento report: Gen Ed Mund G Brown Jr must sign by midnight to enact the first state budget totaling 11.5 billion for next year. The legislature approved an 11 day after deadline compromise, $120 million above Brown’s initial request, leaving five days to study before the July 1 fiscal year start.
County supervisors meet at 10 a.m. in the courthouse to review ambulance contracts and a Hillside Hospital bond sponsorship request along Highway 101. At 11 a.m. the Mendo Lake Youth Project funding is on the agenda after a recent $4,700 advance approval.
United Press International reports the White House rejected claims that President Ford delivered an ultimatum to Israel via Ambassador Simha Dinitz. Ford reviewed Middle East options, stressing step by step diplomacy and Geneva as possible paths, while Egypt and Israel probe disengagement terms and withdrawal lines in Sinai amid ongoing talks.
FBI officials say 16 Indians are wanted for involvement in the ambush killings of two agents at a house near Oglala on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Only one man, Herman Thunder Hawk, has been arrested, with investigators widening searches beyond the reservation as 275 agents pursue leads.
The Mendocino County board heard requests from county departments and outside groups totaling 3.2 million in revenue sharing funds. After hours of testimony, they face divvying 2.1 million available with 1.7 million urged for county departments. Outside groups seek 793,890 and 580,000 for six water districts. Final allocations to be decided by August 1 during budget hearings.
A 32 year old Willits man, Gary Eugene Lesley, was arrested on a warrant for perjury connected to the Barbara Stroud rape murder case. He allegedly told the Grand Jury that Dennis Weeks had not confessed, while others said Weeks admitted involvement. Weeks, 25, is among five charged in the January 1973 slaying of 18 year old Stroud. Ukiah attorney Hugh Preston has moved to dismiss the Grand Jury indictment, claiming testimony used truth serum. Other defense lawyers may join motions as Superior Court Judge Timothy O'Brien schedules arguments for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Dept. 2.
