President Carter signaled he has made the B1 bomber decision and may approve a substantial portion of the Air Force request for more than 200 aircraft. A Thursday news conference is expected to announce his choice after a White House breakfast with senators.
Nine major exporters Algeria Ecuador Gabon Indonesia Iran Kuwait Nigeria Qatar and Venezuela announced via OPEC that they will not raise crude oil prices as scheduled. The decision delays a planned five percent increase affecting global markets.
Speaker Thomas ONeill, defender of the $12,900 annual pay raise approved four months earlier, warned that if members lack the guts to vote to keep the raise they ought to get the hell out of here. He spoke in Washington as the issue drew political heat.
Trinity County pursues a federal lawsuit in Sacramento and seeks congressional backing to rewrite the Trinity River Act. Audrey Bush and George Wilburn press Mendocino supervisors for support as locals warn of Dos Rios and Cottonwood reservoir threats to Trinity Lake and local power shares.
About one third of Lake County employees participated in a sick-in to protest the county's failure to offer an acceptable contract. Offices faced disruption as assessor and building inspection staff reported sick and confusion. County leadership warned of penalties for non warranted sick leave.
Elk Democrat Barry Keene says he is near withdrawing from consideration as a possible candidate for Congress. He will stay in the California Legislature if voters keep him there and notes unfinished business including health care costs and timber protection. He says Washington may not appeal and cites his northern California coastal home as a preference.
In three consecutive 3-2 votes the Willits area board reconsidered approving Wuanita Meadows. A ninth approval condition bans building sites in certain areas to limit environmental impact, with roads schools and protection services cited as cost drivers.
As Ukiah Unified comes into being at 12:01 a.m. Friday the existing district dissolves its assets to the new board led by Ray Worster. Potter Valley absorbs a 6.8 percent share of inventory and may lease a bus while awaiting new units. The outgoing board finalizes the dissolution with meetings planned to complete the split and implement the plan.
The city bought 1.2 acre north fire station land on N State Street from John and Opal Mayfield for 120000 cash after Mayor Simpson secured a breakthrough in talks. Council debated terms and tax breaks with officials eyeing a July 12 federal funds deadline for a 475000 public works grant.
