Fingers Too Valuable as Saver for As
Oakland reliever Rollie Fingers thriving in the 1971 season shift as a stopper. He earned his fifth save in a 6-4 win over the Twins, extending a 20-inning scoreless streak across eight appearances. Fingers notes better control and a downed ball as a reliever, noting his limited warmups suit him. Chuck Dobson earned the win, while Campaneris and Rudi added key hits. Blyleven took the loss as Vida Blue looms for Oakland’s bid to keep the division lead.

McLain Seeks Fresh Markes for Washington Nine
Washington pitcher Denny McLain, linked to Cy Young and other Hall of Famers, pursues dubious records held by Bennie Daniels, John Townsend, and Bob Groom as the Senators endure a brutal season. Despite a 4-14 start and nine straight losses, the 27-year-old remains buoyant, noting he has four more wins than last year at this time after a midseason trade from Detroit.
