Jeep Schmitz Built in Ukiah Hero Becomes SF State Weight Lifter

Jeep Schmitz a Ukiah high school standout and 220 pound defensive tackle for San Francisco State builds strength through a lifelong weight training program. He coaches local youths after school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ukiah High, aims for further competitive lifting, and has earned titles in Santa Clara Valley Open and high placements in Oakland YMCA and Northern California meets.

Mays Missing from National League All Star Starters

Willie Mays sits out as NL starting lineup selections are announced for the 38th All Star Game set for July 11 in Anaheim. Primo Carnera Death Ends Gentle Giant Boxing Era

Primo Carnera, the 1933 world heavyweight champion known as the gentle giant, died at 60 in his birthplace town after a long illness including cirrhosis and diabetes. He won the title from Sharkey in 1933, lost to Baer in 1934, and later wrestled. He weighed 260 pounds in his prime and fought 109 matches with 66 knockouts. His death follows a life tracing from a carpenter to boxing prominence.

Colt League Benefit Game Set With Prize Drawings

Friday night in Ukiah hosts a Colt League benefit at Anton Stadium featuring the Colts versus Shearmen. The event includes a 6 p.m. pregame, a hunting rifle or TV prize for a spectator, and a main event game with local youth and semi pro veterans.
