Water Board weighs rules for aerial herbicide spraying
After a four hour hearing with more than 30 speakers the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board kept a vote open on strict regulations for aerial spraying of herbicides in forest land. About 100 people attended at Purdy Hall with farmers and officials from Modoc County chartering a plane for the day. Rules would apply to forests only not crops and require a 60 day notice, dye tagging, contingency plans for spills and safe disposal of containers. The board debated but did not adopt, with a 3-3 deadlock on delaying action to meet with county commissioners. The panel plans to resume discussion August 11 in Crescent City. Gayle Lucas of Fort Bragg Environmental Center urged adoption after reviewing testimony. Beltrami, Morris, and Tuttle voted no on initial motion while Beltrami Keegan and Senestrero voted yes. Absent were Cunha Norwich and Smith.

Georgia-Pacific names Ritchie head of northern operations
George J. Ritchie is named general manager of Georgia-Pacific's Northern California Division, succeeding Fred C. Holmes who retires after 36 years in the lumber business. The change takes effect July 15. Ritchie was most recently VP of operations for Pope & Talbot in Portland, Oregon. Holmes has served as GP Fort Bragg general manager since 1974 and will advise local management.

Five year old dies in Clearlake motorcycle crash
A San Pablo family of three on a westbound motorcycle on Lakeshore Drive collided head on with a turning vehicle at Colusa Street. Five year old Tammy Annette Griffin died on arrival at Redbud Hospital.
