Ukiah enjoyed a temporary break from extreme heat with noon at 73 degrees after four consecutive days above 100. The current June totals exceed last year’s warmth, while past months show sporadic 100 plus days in 1963 and last September.

Cars Roll in Three Redwood Valley Accidents
Three Redwood Valley drivers rolled their cars in separate crashes near Willits and Hopland. Jerry Phillips, 18, lost control on Highway 101 north of Willits and rolled, damaging fencing but uninjured. Leroy Nicolay, 34, hit an automatic signal device on W Road, truck rolled, he was treated for a headache. Robert Lew Crist of Covelo, 25, fired a 30 30 rifle in the air during a late night celebration in Covelo. Deputies say he pointed the gun at Deputy Richard Madigan when asked to lower it. Crist was jailed in Mendocino County for drunkenness and displaying a gun in a rude and angry manner.

Six Killed in Truck Blast at Snake Farm
A dynamite laden truck exploded on Route 209 in Bushkill Pennsylvania near a snake farm. Six people were killed including three volunteer firemen, with many others injured. The blast left a 50 foot crater. the snake farm was destroyed and traffic diverted as civil defense and hospitals struggled to cope.
