Simmons named to post Ukiah Unified special projects director

John Simmons 46, resigning Mendocino Unified superintendent, named Ukiah Unified's first full time director of special projects in education by the board. He was a leading candidate after a 20 applicant field and a three person in depth interview, praised for building compensatory education and coordinating district programs. He will report around Aug 11 with his wife and two children to relieve workload and unite competing ed programs.

Conservation group seeks to cut county chamber funds

Mendocino Conservation and Planning Foundation asks the county to withdraw about 50 000 public dollars from the Chamber of Commerce because the chamber opposed the coastal plan and Prop 20. Pot bill to Senate for final approval

County funds extend for CETA and PEP programs

County supervisors received word that funding for two federal job programs CETA and PEP will continue at least until July 31. Beltrami said $120,000 was allocated for a six week summer youth program to provide 250 jobs for youths aged 14 to 18, with placement through the Mendocino Lake Youth Project. The board previously approved partial MLVP support, and Lake County officials indicated further funds may not be available despite a three year grant.
