Downtown committee prioritizes parking and streets over courthouse removal

Ukiah downtown revitalization committee chair Lee Enemark told the Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce that improving off street parking and streets is more important than removing the courthouse. The plan, created with architects Kappeler and Axt, outlines seven parking areas within 600 feet of downtown and proposes a new county courthouse site south of Perkins Street and east of Main. The proposal has been submitted to the city council, and redevelopment agency next meets to review.

Clouds Build as Showers Rise Across Northwestern California

Increasing clouds bring showers or thundershowers from Cape Mendocino northward to Point Arena and Ukiah tonight and Tuesday. Fort Bragg highs 57 today and 57 Tuesday with 49 tonight, Ukiah highs 80 today and 68 Tuesday with 49 tonight. Small craft advisory from Point Arena southward and wind rising northward tonight.

New trial sought for Burris in manslaughter case

Attorney Joe Allen will seek a new trial for Phillip E. Burris in Dept 1 of Superior Court before Judge A B Broaddus at 9 30 a m Thursday. The motion alleges the county clerk's office errors caused the jury to receive inadmissible documents. Burris and co defendant Michael E Betts were convicted of fatally beating Albert M Wagar during a robbery. Kevin Smith testified with immunity. Sentencing for Burris and Betts is set for July 3. an identical motion by Betts’ counsel is anticipated.

Pomolita Band Impresses Disneyland Audiences

Pomolita marching band wowed about 30 000 Disneyland visitors yesterday afternoon and earned a repeat invitation for next year after a short audition for the Disneyland director of bands. Ed Singer guides the group which returns to Ukiah later today after a weekend in Anaheim and Knott's Berry Farm.

Fatal shooting near Clear Lake Oaks investigated

Deputies seek clues in a possibly accidental fatal shooting of 25 year old Pamela Adrienne Schlegel near a remote trailer northeast of Clearlake Oaks. Schlegel died at the scene from a chest gunshot wound after a friend, Rickie Fearn, 39, returned to unlock the door. initial statements place the shot near the van where she waited. Deceased and Fearn were returning to the trailer at 10 30 p m Saturday. no further details released by the Lake County sheriff.

Kidnappers Free Hostages As Manhunt Continues In Belgium

In Ostend a taxi driver found 6 year old Hubert Bonnet and 3 year old Ingrid unharmed 24 hours after they were seized from Knokke Le Zoute. Police broaden the manhunt for four gunmen who fled with money and jewels after binding the Bonnet family. The father Pierre Bonnet, steel executive, had offered to pay ransom but it is unknown if any payment occurred.

Supervisors Tackle Busy Agenda With Budget Talk

County supervisors will begin a packed meeting agenda tomorrow, starting with a preliminary 1975-74 budget presentation and expected adoption ahead of budget hearings. At 2:30 pm they will review a joint powers agreement for medical services and hear reports on federal job programs.
