Sudden Shift Senate Committee Holds Tax Bill For Budget Signing

In Sacramento Senate Finance Committee seized Gov Ronald Reagan’s 1.08 billion tax bill, with Chairman George Miller Jr pledging to withhold approval until the state budget is signed. The move aligns the big revenue measure with the budget, after a surprise reversal by the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee. The bill would raise the sales tax to 5 cents per dollar, boost the income tax by 98 percent, and add a 7 cent per pack cigarette tax with 3 cents for local government. It also increases taxes on banks, cigars, pipe tobacco, liquor, insurance, and inheritance. Miller’s panel plans to require budget passage before forwarding the tax bill to the Finance Committee for final action.

Fire at Crawford Lumber Mill Sparks Heavy Loss in Ukiah

A fire at Crawford Lumber Mill in Ukiah caused an estimated 10 000 to 15 000 dollars in damage. The blaze began in a green chain shed and disrupted PG E power lines, hindering water supply as Ukiah Fire Department and five State Division of Forestry units battled the flames. Firefighters pumped water from the river with two units and 2 500 feet of hose, focusing on saving the kiln and nearby lumber. Continuous pumping restored suppression as crews worked to control spot fires and limit damage.
