More than 400 Ukiah high school graduates and dates attended the annual Scram post graduation party at Purdy Hall. Parents organized a Night at Pirate's Cove with two Bay Area bands, a large buffet, a lumberjack breakfast, and tropical decorations transforming the hall into a pirate scene.
President Nixon’s 60 day price freeze halts many planned hikes across industries from steel to autos and rescinds some increases that were due today. Major firms including U.S. Steel and Bethlehem postpone hikes while others like Goodyear rescind tire price increases.
The Highway Patrol reported five people escaped injury in two unusual non-injury accidents. At 11:50 a.m. on N State Street a collision involving three cars followed a driver reversing upon noticing a westbound vehicle. At 11:10 p.m. on Highway 101 a car towing a house trailer rolled over after losing control on a curve.
Boonville hosts Buckaroo Days at Mendocino County Fairgrounds with events including a Buckaroo Queen Contest at 1 p.m. Saturday, a 9 p.m. western dance, queen crowning at 10:30 p.m., and gifts from local merchants. Sheep dog trials follow at 2 p.m. with free Saturday afternoon admission. Assemblyman Barry Keene says he expects Speaker Moretti to approve a select committee to investigate Georgia Pacific timber operations in Mendocino County. The panel would review local government impact, employment, and natural resources while Georgia Pacific touts sustained yield and reforestation. A company spokesman notes minimal log exports to Samoa and promises a forthcoming Portland report on future plans.
