Senator Zenovich Targets Reagan Cattle Tax Shelter
Sacramento senator George N. Zenovich vows to push as yet unannounced legislation this year to dismantle or curb Ronald Reagan's cattle tax shelter practices. He notes the 1960 federal statute foundation and says the measure would address tax manipulation by individuals linked to the Reagan Cattle Co. and Oppenheimer Industries. Local lawmakers comment on the need for parity between corporations and individuals in tax rules amid debates on perceived advantages for the wealthy.

Tule elk ban bill heads to Finance Committee
The Senate Natural Resources and Wildlife Committee endorsed a bill to ban Tule elk hunting until the population reaches 2000, a process experts say could take 30 years. Sponsored by Sen. Peter H. Behr the measure would relocate elk to new habitats in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys to foster larger herds, despite high relocation costs and a possible local vote.
