Francis P. Carr testified that Army counselor John G. Adams called Pvt G David Schine a hostage and suggested better treatment if McCarthy probes ended. Carr quoted Roy M Cohn on trading homosexuals in the Air Force for an advance in next Army inquiry. Adams and Stevens deny the specific incidents. Carr said Adams warned of high administration signals in the Army McCarthy dispute and that January and March remarks showed the matter as a high policy issue. Phoenix police hunt for the $75,000 ransom paid for the release of Mrs. Herbert Smith, while Daniel Marsin, 43, denies or confirms the abduction. Marsin, held on $50,000 bond for kidnapping for ransom, faces circumstantial evidence including voice recognition from Mrs. Smith who identified him in a lineup. His attorney contests the identification, noting description differences. A 1949 black Buick linked to the case and shell findings bolster the investigation.
Senator Ralph Flanders warns Senator Joseph McCarthy to answer all questions about his finances within 3 12 weeks. If no reply, Flanders will seek a Senate vote to strip McCarthy of chairmanships. He calls McCarthy a foe of Western civilization and accuses him of mixing communism with fascism.
Preparations are underway for St Marys parish annual barbecue at Ukiah Municipal Park on Sunday June 20 to feed about 3000. Eighteen hundred pounds of beef are ready to be barbecued by experienced cooks. Prices are 150 for adults 75 for children and preschoolers admitted free. Serving starts 1230 and runs until all are served. Proceeds benefit St Marys school fund.
A. N. John Rawles California Highway Patrol inspector and sheriff candidate demands a promised CHP probe into his campaign methods and standing. He says a Daily Journal June 7 front page story hurt his campaign, where he placed third behind incumbent B. G. Broaddus and Reno Bartolomie who advances to November runoff. The Journal quoted deputy commissioner Ross McDonald about possible disciplinary action and an intense investigation. Rawles had denied being on the state payroll during the race.
The Glenn County Planning Association backs forming an organization to boost interest in a proposed Covelo road to speed travel between the Sacramento Valley and the coast. The route would pass Low Gap west of Orland and connect to a planned tie-in with the Redwood Empire Association. current winter snow often closes the existing road via Covelo, with travelers using Williams.
The California Wool Growers Association schedules its semi annual board meeting June 19 at Ukiah District Fairgrounds with lamb wool promotion to be highlighted. Topics include federal and state legislation, animal and dog control, taxation, water issues, animal health, the 1955 Ram Sale and Wool Show, and a potential westbound freight rate cut on fresh meat. Judge Frank Noriega will preside. a Friday advisory committee meeting precedes, with Mendocino-Lake Wool Growers hosting and a county lunch supervised by Russell Foote.
The County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing tomorrow at 3 30 PM to discuss excluding properties from the proposed Ukiah Valley Sanitary District 884600. Twenty three landowners have asked for exclusion citing agricultural use and non suitability for subdivision into residential lots. Attorneys for some owners delayed the hearing from June 1 seeking clearer boundary details from Clyde C Kennedy Engineering Co. If enough lands are excluded the district could fail for insufficient tax base.
The Methodist church will conduct a vacation school for children aged 4 to 5, starting June 21 and ending July 2, offering a brief program of activities for young learners.
Northwestern California remains fair through Tuesday with night and morning low clouds near the coast. Highs around 79 to 84 and lows near 50s. northwest winds 7 to 25 mph, diminishing Tuesday. Fort Bragg area also fair through Tuesday with night fog near the coast, temperatures little changed, winds 12 to 25 mph near coast, warmer inland and easing Tuesday.
Irma Schaef 44, former Healdsburg resident, died by carbon monoxide in her Ukiah home garage on Calvert court Saturday morning. Funeral held in Santa Rosa with Rev. Barnett officiating. Survived by husband Howard Schaef, two sons, mother Anna McPhail, sister Irnita Hitchcock, and three grandchildren. cause stated as ill health.
Ten faculty members across Ukiah elementary schools will resign or take leaves for the coming year. Yokayo tops departures with six, Pomolita has three, and Northside one. Several will teach elsewhere or pursue different careers, with replacements not yet announced.
President Eisenhower and hundreds of White House staff hid in an underground shelter as a nationwide alert began. A fleet of imaginary bombers threatened 41 U S targets with estimated 287000 deaths and 400000 injuries, part of Operation Alert spanning the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Fred D. Brandt, 31, who jumped bail after his 1950 burglary conviction, was returned from South Dakota by Deputy Slim Witter. Apprehended in Rapid City after a nationwide manhunt, Brandt was taken to San Quentin at 11 this morning. His brother Thomas, 36, was paroled from San Quentin after also being sentenced March 17, 1950 for Palace Hotel burglaries.
In a San Francisco United Press report a mock atomic blast at 9 28 am 3400 feet above Powell Street turned downtown into an inferno killing 169 370 and injuring 82 024 as civil defense workers plotted response Oakland also simulated a bomb at 15th and San Pablo as part of a 44 city drill with 30 percent of enemy bombs shot down The exercise aimed to test damage in Zone A near Powell and Sutter with destroyed buildings impassable roads broken mains and power line destruction
Charles Leon of Santiago Chile visits Ukiah as guest of California Spray Chemical Corp to study agricultural pest and disease control. He represents the Santiago company serving Chilean agriculture with Ortho products and farm machinery and will spend the week with R B Chase, branch manager. Leon says Chilean agricultural conditions resemble those in this region.
