McCarthy Sees a Blank Wall in Army Inquiry

Washington Senator Joseph R. McCarthy accused the Army-McCarthy hearings of hitting a blank wall when seeking information on whether higher ups concealed Communist ties. On day 32 special counsel Ray H. Jenkins pressed McCarthy over a December memorandum that allegedly contradicts his claim about why the Army sought to remove Maj. Gen. Kirke B. Lawton at Fort Monmouth. Mundt pressed McCarthy about cooperation with the Army and what ended it as McCarthy stated cooperation vanished during probes of subversives at Fort Monmouth.

Ukiah Opens Pool With Seasonal Hours And Fees

Ukiah Municipal pool will open for public swimming with hours on Saturdays Sundays and holidays 1 to 6 pm and weekdays 12:30 to 5:30 pm. Tentative evening swims planned three nights a week after the new water circulation system is installed. Admission charges set for residents and non residents by age.

Feuding Crew of Luxury Yacht Told Coast Guard

SAN FRANCISCO UP The Coast Guard heard a two sided saga of nine feud ing amateur sailors drifting for 12 days in mid Pacific on the battered former luxury yacht Thalia. Skipper Bud Carew claimed a romantic cruise to San Pedro while the passengers said he forced them to work as crew and pump water. The Navy later scuttled the yacht to prevent a navigation hazard after it was found dismasted off Oahu.

Ranch Owners Sued For Accounting Over Livestock Venture

Edward Asher Joseph and Effie Asher, owners of the St. Francis Ranch near Willits, are sued by Kenneth Swedeen for an accounting. He says a July 1, 1952 oral agreement split profits from developing the ranch for livestock, grazing, and general operation. Swedeen asserts he contributed about $13,000 through March 24, 1953, and performed labor and supplied materials through September 7, 1953. He claims the Ashers logged timber circa March 1933, sold 83 cattle on October 17, 1953, and rented two houses while removing fences, allowing sheep to destroy about a quarter of the pasture.

Air Force stages England flight training exercise

The Air Force prepares a large scale training mission in England with twenty RB-36 intercontinental bombers from the Fifth Strategic Air Command Reconnaissance Wing. About 1000 personnel, including 400 tactical airmen, join the deployment led by Col. Edward B. Broadhurst from Smithfield North Carolina.

Wrecked PBM Plane Sighting Off Yaku Shima Island

Search planes spotted wreckage of a missing PBM amphibian near a 6300 foot peak on Yaku Shima Island off Kyushu Japan. Navy reports 17 aboard including seven officers and eight enlisted men. Doctors planned parachute aid for possible survivors.

136 to Graduate This Evening At High School

Ukiah high school will graduate 136 students tonight at Chessall Gymnasium. Four student speakers Carolyn Dorn Miryam Feibusch Leo Bier Jr and Don Mitchell will deliver addresses. Diplomas will be presented by District Superintendent W A Chessall with music by the band and mixed chorus under Kenneth Cooper and Rev R C Groves offering invocation.

Friends report P H Joseph's condition has greatly improved after more than a week in hospital and at home on Walnut Street. Pomolita Graduation Honors Ukiah Students and Staff

More than 1200 attendees watched Pomolita eighth graders receive diplomas as District Superintendent Jacek Simpson presented certificates read by John Ievnes. Outstanding boy and girl were Joe Myers and Valerie Crawford. other honorees included Marjorie Frohn, Dennis Heath, seventh graders who crowned queen and king, and spelling champion Neil Mercer.

Kidnapper in Desert Search After Ransom Payday

Deputies FBI agents and a mounted posse resumed a dawn desert search for a bold kidnapper who abducted Evelyn Ann Smith, 23, wife of a Phoenix industrialist, and received 75000 dollars in ransom before releasing her in the Superstition Mountains foothills. The mother of two said the kidnapper feared cancer and planned the crime as a final fling. She left Reidell's beauty shop Wednesday before vanishing.

Roger Stevens Home After Four Years

Roger Stevens son of the late Fred and Gladys Stevens, missing since April 20, 1950, returned to Ukiah and soon planned a visit to his brother Norman at San Jose State College. He spoke with his grandmother Mrs Frances Jones and rode with family to arrange further travel, while a wide search publicized details of his disappearance.

Dennis Cleared Of All Charges In Liquor Case

Walter Dennis, proprietor of Denny's Auto Court in Calpella, was acquitted by Judge W. S. Van Dyke after a day-long trial on charges of selling liquor to a minor. Insufficient evidence for conviction led to the clearing. Defense counsel was Newell Rawles. Five youths were arrested in Uliah with beer. one teen said he bought it at Denny's.

Coast Air Lines Face CAB Scrutiny Over Local Service

The Civil Aeronautics Board voted 3 to 2 to study United Air Lines bid to take over West Coast routes from Southwest Airways, renewing debate on local service carriers. Democratic members Josh Lee and Josphine Adams dissented, fearing a push to end local air service as authorization nears expiry.
