No Confidence Vote Presses Ukiah Unified on Split High Schools
Redwood Valley-Calpella parents voted no confidence in the Ukiah Unified district administration while expressing strong support for district teachers. They urged a two high school system north and south of Ukiah and keeping Potter Valley high school open until new high schools are built. The statement calls for avoiding dangerous pupil walks, avoiding double sessions for primary grades, and exploring a long-range plan to split the district into two high schools before conversion of Ukiah High to a junior high.

Train strike severely damages car near Thrasher Mill
A 16 year old Ukiah high school student, Michael Wesley Chesser, escaped serious injury after a Northwestern Pacific freight train struck his late model pickup near Thrasher Mill in north Calpella Monday evening. He was taken to Ukiah General Hospital in fair condition with possible major injuries. Patrolmen reported Chesser drove west on a road near the crossing at a slow speed as a six car freight train with three engines and a caboose approached. The locomotive, led by engineer Donald Burns of Santa Rosa, sounded its whistle intermittently. The impact pushed the car about 819 feet along the track, leaving it totaled on the northbound track. The driver was not ejected. Investigators continued questioning Chesser as the train, after a brief stop, resumed southbound with its lumber and freight.
