Scholars Honored Coveted Diplomas For Ukiah Class of '64

The Ukiah high school Class of 1964, 310 seniors, received diplomas from Supt. W. O. Murphy at Carl Purdy Hall. Top scholar Patricia Foster and foreign exchange students Peter Giving and Juergen Hasenkamp notable. Six student speakers highlighted the ceremony, with awards list running to many scholarships and honors for the class.

Weekend activity bonanza packs Ukiah to Santa Rosa area

Readers are urged to enjoy a busy lineup this weekend with diverse events. NASCAR hardtop races at Ukiah 12th District Fairgrounds 8:30 p.m. Cot ten Rosser rodeo opens at Lakeport Fairgrounds 8 p.m. tonight. Also tonight South Ukiah Little League plays at Talmage 6 p.m. Saturday features Golden Gate All-Arabian Horse Show 8 a.m. start and 1 p.m. races at Chris Beck Arena Santa Rosa plus two-day Small Boat Racing Assoc Championships on Clear Lake Highlands. Cloverdale Western Days Gymkhana begins 10 a.m. Saturday with junior riders. Cowboy Water Ski Championships and Lakeport Cotton Rosser rodeo final perform ance slated Saturday. Ukiah semi pro hosts Fort Bragg 8 p.m. in a classic rivalry at Anton Stadium. Sunday wraps the Arabian show at Santa Rosa and Cloverdale rodeo 1 p.m. with Big Small Boat finals at Clear Lake Highlands and over 100 trap shooters at Point Arena.

Pacific Telephone Fights Utility Ruling In California

SAN FRANCISCO UPI Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. challenged a California Public Utilities Commission order that refunds 80 million dollars to customers and cuts rates by about 41 million annually. The 6.3 percent return replaces a 6.75 percent finding from 1958. A 3-2 vote on retroactivity sparked dissent as commissioner Mitchell argued refunds infringe the companys constitutional rights.

Pope Paul Urged to Fire McIntyre Over Race Stance

A California priest, William DuBay, asks Pope Paul VI to remove Cardinal James McIntyre as Los Angeles archbishop for failing to lead against racial discrimination.
