House votes to drop car rebate plan and tax gas guzzlers

The House Ways and Means Committee voted 31 to 5 to eliminate President Carter’s rebate proposal for high mileage cars. They began considering a compromise to tax gas guzzlers, citing potential harm to the auto industry. Carter had proposed rebates from 47 to 499 dollars starting with 1978 models.

Controllers Testify on DC9 Crash Toward Dobbins Base

Two air traffic controllers testified at an NTSB hearing that a crippled Southern jet could have reached Dobbins Air Force Base before crashing after a 180 degree turn during a 2 1 2 minute communications failure. The DC9 lost 7000 feet and the crash killed 72. More controllers are to testify on the emergency handling.

States Lose Medicare Funds Over Legal Requirement

HEW Secretary Joseph Califano withholds 142 million dollars in Medicare funds from 20 states for breaching a legal requirement he deems unfair. New York leads with 53.8 million, followed by California 15.3 million and Pennsylvania 13.6 million.

Summer job hunt for Ukiah teens faces tight market

Ukiah youths face limited summer work as officials say openings will be few. The Journal offers free five line Situations Wanted ads for ages 16 to 21 and the EDD will match job seekers with employers. The CETA program plans to place 400 youths in county jobs with pay rates of 2.30 to 2.50 per hour.
