Mendocino County’s long serving administrator Dwight Hulse submitted his resignation this morning, citing deteriorating health after serving since September 1, 1962. The board accepted it without comment. He praised working with the board and county departments.
Fort Bragg reports 66 year old Mark Vernon Hutchings of Woodland drowned about 6:30 a.m. today half a mile south of Cleone Beach while skin diving with friend Charles Pryor, also of Woodland. Pryor returned to the site and found Hutchings face down. Funeral arrangements are pending at Cain Mortuary. Hutchings is survived by his widow Lee.
Addis Ababa police say Ethiopia moved from left to right-hand driving with only a handful of minor accidents. A 20 mile per hour speed limit was enforced for the first week of the transition to accommodate the switch. The change was ordered as most imported cars are right-hand drive.
County Supervisors faced a funding crisis for the County Library and Bookmobile from July 1 when state support ends to January 15, 1965 when county funds become available. Proposal A was approved, with June 23 set to adopt an ordinance to continue service. Virginia Hughes outlined options including six months of limited service, using reserve funds, suspending service until 1965, or funding as a county gift.
Edwin Brasher Harris a four year old Castro Valley youth was subject to two CHP arrests within five hours for drunken driving and traffic violations. He first crossed the center line and sped past 75 mph north on Highway 101 near Hopland Forestry station prompting a chase with siren and light. Second arrest occurred near Cummings for following too closely while traveling about 50 mph. Bail set at 347 dollars before a later release. Harris remained in jail as of this month.
Ukiah Chamber of Commerce reports progress in the Keep Pace With Tomorrow campaign. As of this morning 84 percent of the $18,500 minimum goal had been raised with 15,503 dollars. final reports due Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Palace Hotel. Members and joiners increased, with six business groups varying in achievement. The Final Victory session Thursday afternoon is urged for all campaign participants.
Lake County sheriff's office boats search for three men missing after a Sunday boat trip on Clear Lake. Missing and feared drowned are Henry Crim 35 James Eseltine 48 and Jack Willis Oakland. Their 14 foot boat capsized near Horse Shoe Bend after being rented from Clauson's boat rental.
Michigan Governor George Romney said after meetings with Richard Nixon and several Republican governors that he is considering a GOP presidential bid. Nixon warned Goldwater could be challenged if key issues remained unresolved, while Romney noted governors urged him to run but he did not confirm candidacy.
Jacob R. Borth aged 58 of Willits died in a Bakersfield intersection crash when his car ran a red light and hit a car driven by Sharon Carlson 25 of Bakersfield. Carlson and a passenger sustained minor injuries. Borth had lived in Willits 13 years and recently moved to Bakersfield for a job. His wife Edith worked in Willits.
Northwestern California weather reports showers today with cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday. Ikiah records 64 and 45, Napa 65 and 44, Santa Rosa 66 and 43. Winds north to northwest 12 to 25 knots.
Former president Dwight D. Eisenhower told governors to push amendments via a constitutional convention to balance federal budgets at least biannually. He argued the convention process would empower states to restrain Washington, enabling measures like a presidential item veto and stricter budget submissions. He did not address the ongoing GOP presidential contest.
Mendocino and Lake County fruit growers are invited to meet with First District Congressman Don Clausen at 10 a.m. Monday June 15 at the Mendocino County Agricultural Center to discuss a fruit frost warning service. Also attending will be U S Weather Bureau staff from California and Washington D C according to Agricultural Commissioner Ted Eriksen Jr.
Palermo Sicily police report Giuseppe Calascibetta a 37 year old man shot himself in the head Monday an hour before his planned marriage. He was hospitalized in critical condition with no known motive for the apparent suicide.
The Senate approved a jury trial amendment to the civil rights bill 51-48, excluding voting rights cases, and rejected a measure 56-40 to end federal aid for teacher institutes and training programs aiding desegregation. The Morton amendment mirrors a previously rejected proposal.
The Ukiah Union High School District Board of Trustees cancels tonight's meeting due to commencement and an incomplete board. A rescheduled regular meeting will be held next Tuesday, June 23, at 8 p.m. in the high school library to conduct June business.
Montana faced massive floods after heavy runoff and rains. Rail lines were disrupted and property damage expected in the millions. Billings reported 1.22 inches of rain with more possible.
The Los Angeles Times reports a preprimary agreement between Pierre Salinger and Alan Cranston would have the winner aid the loser’s campaign deficit. Salinger, who beat Cranston, faces Republican George Murphy in November. Brown backed Cranston. Salinger later gained Brown’s and Assembly Speaker Unruh’s support.
