Concord Minute Men win Grand Sweepstakes at Ukiah Band Review

Concord high school's Minute Men edged Ukiahi's Wildcat March Band by 1.5 points to take Grand Sweepstakes at the Ukiah Invitational Band Review. Ukiah junior high Pomolita won its division, while Concord's Minute Men took overall honors and Ukiah's Cathy Taylor excelled in mace despite a wrist injury. The event drew 23 bands amid heat and parade crowds along Mill and State to the fairgrounds.

Ukiah Jaycees Parade Honors Float and Exhibits

The Ukiah Jaycees parade crowned the Ukiah Valley Rehabilitation Center as Sweepstakes and Novelty winner for top float. Awards were announced for commercial and noncommercial floats, automobiles, mounted entries, and fire department showcases, highlighting local groups and individuals.

Mendocino man released on bail after murder conviction

Warren Chapman 51, convicted of the 1975 slaying of Robert Parducci 28 of Fort Bragg, was freed on a $50,000 property bond posted by Jim Bertain and Mona Ivey after a Santa Rosa court appearance before Judge Rex Sater. The case was continued to June 24 for trial setting and venue motions.

California death penalty bill survives Supreme Court ruling

Deputy Attorney General Mike Franchetti said SB155 to reinstate capital punishment in California would be unaffected by the high court ruling barring mandatory death penalties for killing police officers. He noted the decision would have no effect if Governor Brown vetoes the bill. The Roberts case cited signals the justices may revisit the issue.

Summer Roars Into Ukiah With Weekend Heat Surge

The Ukiah fire department logged a high of 99 on Sunday after 90 Saturday and 85 Friday marking the first 90s weekend of the year. Last year the same three days ranged from 72 to 78 with no cooling relief as Sunday night fell to 85 and this morning’s low reached 61.
