Ukiah High School honors 1962 baseball team and managers

Ukiah High School awarded varsity letters to the 1962 Ukiah baseball team and recognized its managers and jayvee players. Notable honorees include Don Forthaber Barry Johnson Rick Martinsen Ken Peoples Jim Schmitz Brian Weatherford and Dennis Gwin for their steady contribution and versatility. Coach Ruben Beseda noted it as his last season before moving to Montgomery High School and praised the managerial staff Kent Haws Bill Crawford and Ron Phillips for their multi sport leadership.

Thirty-six Ukiah High School track athletes and three managers receive Block A Jetter awards from coaches Fred Sten Bob Gein and Marshall Leye. NL data show attendance up 41 percent this year totaling 3 491 345 with Houston and New York accounting for most of the rise. Houston drew 466 516 fans on 28 dates averaging 16 261, New York 351 928 on 20 dates averaging 17 596. Dodgers in their first season at the new stadium drew 800 542 on 25 dates averaging 32 022, Giants follow with 527 421 attendance.

Ukiah Varsity's 62 season stats show Joe Jahn led with a .349 average in 15 of 20 games while the team hit .235 overall. Wes Knott and Ron Hindley dueled at Giorno Park with Knott allowing five singles and fanning 13 as the Santa Rosa Comets, the 1961 champions, defeated Ukiah 5 to 0. Hindley struck out 10 but a defensive spate by Benjamin produced a sudden four run burst in support. Benjamin hopes to schedule another Giorno game soon.

Score of 75 Target For Weekend Golfers

Newtown Square Pa USSPTY A target score of 75 is set for about 100000 weekend golfers to win a bronze medal from the PGA during National Golf Week. Gene Littler the US Open champion posted 75 in an exhibition win over PGA titleholder Jerry Barber at Aronimink Country Club where next month’s PGA championship will be played. Barber shot 77 in rain on the rough course.
