Ukiah's Connie Mack opens the brand-new league with a 1-0 win at Healdsburg as Doug Modrell throws a no hit no run no walk gem. Solid infield defense from McCain Simmons Kennedy Finnegan and strong outfield support from Donnie Clark keep Ukiah ahead. Kennedy scores on a walk and the second run is denied on a close play at home. Cloverdale edges Santa Rosa 3-2 later in day, Hopland expected for next doubleheader.

Merchs Split With Fort Bragg In Weekend Baseball

Ukiah Merchants split weekend games with Fort Bragg in a county league tune up. Friday night the Merchants, led by Gary Borgna’s fast pitching, beat Fort Bragg 7 to 14 with strong support from the Old Pros and a core of young players. The following day Fort Bragg won 7 to 1 as Ukiah struggled on the mound and with timely hitting.

Robinson Title Bout Maden Fight on TV

Sugar Ray Robinson is favored at 2-1 to win the New York and Massachusetts version of the world middleweight title from Paul Pender at the Boston Garden Friday night. The 15 round bout will be televised nationally by NBC. Robinson, about 39, lost the 160-pound title to Pender in Boston January 22. A ringside writers poll favored Robinson 19 to 5. Also NBC coverage and an ABC telecast from Chicago Stadium feature Eddie Machen against Alonzo Johnson in a 10 round heavyweight bout. Machen is a 4-1 favorite.

Hard Hitting Fighter Rudell Stitch Dies Drowning

Louisville boxer Rudell Stitch, ranked welterweight contender and Carnegie Hero Medal recipient, drowned in the Ohio River below the Clarksville dam while trying to save companion Charles L. Oliver. Oliver also died. Stitch, with wife and six children, had been honored for rescuing a worker in 1958. Bruner and family witnessed the tragedy. Memorial funds were set up for Stitch’s family.
