Across Missouri police remove soap from a jail cell to recapture slipperily escaping suspect Bob Kuyendall after he coated himself and squeezed through bars. In Austria a six mile dam plan to block fish from Neusiedler Lake Hungary delays movement across the lake joining both sides.
Thousands of visitors amid rain watched the Kilauea lava lake drop 20 to 30 feet per hour after a spectacular eruption. Smoke rose 13,000 feet as avalanches from crater walls hurled boulders into the molten pit. Thirteen Girl Scouts and two leaders camped on the rim fled to safety when a fiery fissure opened.
Northwestern California shows fair conditions today tonight and Wednesday with warmer temperatures and lower humidity. Local highs near 83 to 85 and low 40s to 50s with coastal and inland wind speeds 12 to 25 mph. San Francisco forecast calls for fair weather through Sunday with temperatures 6 to 12 degrees above normal.
Roy M. Cohn testified under oath during the Army McCarthy hearings that he did not rebuke an Army official for protesting to Sen. McCarthy about special treatment for Pvt. G David Schine. Cohn disputed Adams account that he threatened to teach him not to repeat such actions and denied using the term double cross in remarking to Secretary Stevens. He also declined a definitive yes or no on seeking a New York assignment for Schine, saying his aim was to advance the subcommittee’s work and have Schine assist.
Three people died in Mendocino county traffic crashes over Memorial Day weekend. Van Meter White, 48, a San Francisco lumber broker, was found in his wrecked car on Rockport road after apparently suffering a heart attack and plunging 200 feet. He died after CHP arrival. The first fatality occurred Saturday night when Louis E. Gorton, 38, Willits woodsman, headed over a bank on Keller road. Gorton and passenger James Carpenter, 47, Covelo, died. Carpenter died Sunday in Ukiah hospital of a broken back. Charles Gorton and Harry Henthorn survived. Funeral plans for White and Gorton are pending. Lake County reported no fatal accidents or drownings.
A $30,000 blaze destroyed a Pueblo lumber yard and several buildings, plus a warehouse of broom straw, while city firefighters stood by. They were forbidden by ordinance to fight the fire because it occurred just outside city limits. The note adds that Pueblo County property owners pay lower taxes and may lose fire protection unless they seek incorporation and higher taxes.
Ukiah High School band and choruses present a Wednesday evening concert at Todd's Grove with Kenneth J. Cooper directing. The program features three band groups, Girls Glee Club, and a capella choir performing classic marches, songs, and patriotic pieces plus the National Anthem. Charles E. Williams age 19, a Ward 12 patient at Mendocino State Hospital, hanged himself with part of a bed sheet from an air vent. Coroner B. G. Broaddus said Williams was likely hanging for hours before ward superintendent Al Lemos found him at 7 a.m. The deceased had rolled blankets to imitate a sleeping person, contributing to the delay in discovery.
California's Memorial Day weekend claimed 44 lives with 30 highway fatalities. Drownings totaled eight, plus two plane deaths and four other incidents. Northern California victims include Spencer Wheeler 48 struck by a car in San Francisco and Sally Ellen Conger 25 killed when a car overturned near Maricopa. Old line continues with drownings in Stanislaus River and lakes near Gilroy and Paradise.
Ukiah fire department logged two grass fires and a chimney scare during Memorial holidays. At Cliff Place Highway 20 at 2 02 Saturday afternoon a grass fire, at Miles Oak ley East River road 11 41 Sunday morning another grass fire, and a chimney fire at J FE Holliday Tal mage at 10 27 Sunday. No damage was reported.
Washington dispatches report Adm Arthur Radford urged possible use of atomic weapons should the United States intervene in Indochina. Senator McClellan pressed for access to security information, while McCarthy said no law but presidential directive withholds it. Also UC vaccine researchers announced a blue tongue disease vaccine for sheep at 90 percent effectiveness, ready in two weeks prior to midseason outbreaks. Dow Jones shows gains and declines across industrials and rails with light trading. Baseball scores include Philadelphia over Boston by 16 runs, New York over Detroit, and other late results with rain delays in Chicago and Milwaukee games.
