Mansfield weighs ending filibuster on Lockheed loan plan

Garage fire touches off ammunition

A garage fire at No 7 Lorraine Street in Ukiah shortly after noon Wednesday caused ammunition explosions. 22 firefighters from Ukiah and three units fought the blaze, with no injuries reported beyond possible third degree burns to renter Beatrice Kaser. Loss estimated at $6,000.

City leaders weigh future of Mendocino State Hospital

City Manager Lyell Cash told council last night that the city should strongly support keeping Mendocino State Hospital operating in some capacity, even if phased out. Councilmembers backed efforts by supervisors and Assemblyman Belotti to oppose further MSH cutbacks and possible closure after current meetings. The meeting, after a ham dinner from Ukiah volunteer firemen, touched on reducing council meetings and abatement property lists, with Channel 13 outage briefly noted.

Lakeport Hosts Second Annual Junior Rodeo Sunday

Lakeport stages the second annual Junior Rodeo Sunday at the Fairgrounds arena on Martin Street two blocks west of Main. Events start with gymkhana preliminaries at 10 a.m. and a grand entry parade at noon. Highlights include a jackpot steer riding contest for 16 and 17 year olds, a father and son hide race, and a chicken scramble for children under 10. Barrel racing, team and calf roping, and keyhole races are also on the card. Tickets sold at the gate. proceeds fund the Lake County Jaycees youth program with help from the Lake County Senior Horsemen’s Association and judges.

Tehama DA guilty of tipsy driving

Tehama County District Attorney Henry Goff, 35, of Red Bluff, was convicted by a Berkeley municipal court jury of drunken driving after arrest on March 10. He plans an appeal in Alameda County Superior Court, contending substantial errors in prosecutor arguments and jury instructions.

Art display at McGarvey Park showcases 67 students

Deadline set for changes in Yellow Pages

Pacific Telephone Manager Ed Bean announced a deadline of Thursday August 12 for changes to Yellow Page listings in the Lake and Mendocino directory. Alphabetical changes to the white pages are due Friday August 27. The 1971-72 directory will be delivered starting October 1, with Yellow Page sales in the area handled by management personnel.
