A. R. Thomas sheds start the first carload as Chandocino County begins its 1954 pear harvest. The 20 000 ton crop worth about 1 500 000 is expected to move over four to six weeks with 500 railroad cars and hundreds of trucks. Canners anticipate 90 percent No 1 quality. some pears contracted at 80 per ton.
Mrs Eva B Miller 44 Laytonville died Tuesday night at home. Autopsy showed heart condition but stomach inflammation keeps death cause undetermined. Note to husband and letters to a San Francisco daughter indicate despondency. Funeral plans awaited family consultation at Ankers Mortuary Willits.
King F Fay AWOL Marine, who confessed to robbing Smiths Liquor Store on June 21, will be returned to San Diego for dishonorable discharge proceedings. Fay turned himself in to El Dorado County Sheriff with help from his girlfriend's mother, a policewoman, and implicated Rex L Rutherford in the crime. He confessed to multiple liquor store robberies in San Diego Howard Sacramento and other localities and was held at Mather Air Force Base for San Diego military authorities.
London reports Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent urgent telegrams to Conservative MPs to attend a Commons debate on Suez Canal zone policies. Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden to open with a defense of withdrawing all British troops within 20 months, while Head details Egypt talks. Forty-two hard‑line Conservatives oppose withdrawal and plan to vote against the government.
Administration leaders and key congressmen made clear they will not back Syngman Rhee's proposed war of liberation in Asia while praising his resolve. They privately criticized resorting to terror and full-scale war, even as Eisenhower and Rhee exchanged friendly remarks at a Korean embassy dinner.
ADAMS SPRINGS UP The blaze struck twelve summer cabins at Adams Springs Lake County resort yesterday. One guest, James J. McLaughlin aged 65 a retired San Francisco postal clerk, died after attempting to move his belongings from his burning cabin. Fire started outside the cabin. McLaughlin collapsed as he carried three armloads of his effects. Housekeeper Eva Tiffin reported the fire and tried to douse it with a pail of water. Firefighters used water from the swimming pool to extinguish the flames.
Ground breaking this week starts construction on a 44 bed privately operated hospital for Ukiah. Cost near half a million dollars with total project at 440000, site six acres near the airport, designed for eventual 80 to 90 beds. Open to all local doctors and planned for completion in early March.
President Eisenhower convened a National Security Council meeting to examine a universal military service plan. It would abandon direct drafting into reserves and instead create an immediately available reserve force. Defense officials estimate about 750 million dollars per year from 1956, with legislation to compel service in reserve units after regular hitch periods.
A guardian arrangement formed yesterday afternoon in Mendocino County after Carl DeWitt abandoned two young girls, Charlotte Murray six and Patsy four, at the courthouse. The children, tied to the Murray family through Jesse James Murray, were placed in Juvenile Hall pending court action as investigations reveal limited support from their alleged guardians. DeWitt, who had recently cared for Charlotte, left Patsy and Charlotte with James Murray’s associates, prompting courthouse officials to intervene and secure custody for the time being.
Senate Republican Leader Knowland agreed to a full dress debate on a censure resolution against Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy. Sen. Ralph E. Flanders sponsors the measure and seeks a vote tomorrow, while Sen. H. Alexander Smith proposes a bipartisan committee led by Vice President Nixon to study McCarthyism and report by next Feb. 1. Fulbright opposes the substitute, saying no further study needed.
In San Francisco the convict author Daryl Chessman secured a last day stay of execution just hours before his scheduled 10 a.m. PDT death in San Quentin’s gas chamber tomorrow. The stay comes from California Supreme Court Justice Jesse W. Carter, extending his six year battle to avoid the death penalty.
State advisory council approved 657,776 Hill Burton funds for Mendocino County's 83 bed hospital, matching county share to reach 1,271,765 total. Construction slated at 15 months with 42 beds for tuberculosis and 41 for general care, architecture by Stone and Malloy, drawings due October, bids set for September. County officials present at the San Francisco session include Hartley Scaramella Safford and Bainbridge. consultant Koenig.
In San Francisco the American Legion’s 38th annual convention adopted hard hitting resolutions targeting the AMA, fifth amendment and Communist groups. Malcolm Champlin was elected president and William R. Burke named executive committeeman. The 4000 delegates criticized AMA for curbing veterans private medical care and urged revoking citizenship for those claiming Fifth Amendment immunity in Communist inquiries.
Theodore Eriksen county agricultural commissioner and staff occupy a new office north of the District Fair Grounds in a building completed by the Mendocino County Farm Bureau. The office phone is 32 3159. R. D. Foote plans to move in August 7 with the Farm Bureau offices expected by August 15 if all goes well.
Northwestern California will see fair conditions today tonight and Friday with coastal fog and cooler readings in coastal valleys this afternoon and inland areas Friday. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph near the coast. Highs around Ukiah 104 and Santa Rosa 95 Napal 94 Fort Bragg area fog at night and morning otherwise fair today and Friday. Temperature trend shows little change.
